That’s the “TVR” smell! Glue & petrol fumes!

A friend of mine has owned 7 TVRs and the one he truly regrets selling is the Sagaris. He kind of goes into a mini slump when talking about it even though his next purchase was a perfect Tamora. He installed a crate LS3 motor via Topcats which made it absolutely bonkers yet he still hankered after the Sagaris.

I enjoyed the sight - and sound - of a pair of Chevy engined Sagarises at CSCC Brands this summer. If not quite as much as the sexiest TVR of all. the Griffith 400

But you also described it earlier as a work out to drive and not particular suitable to our British roads.

It's a light car so it should be able to have relatively soft springs but still handle well. The fact it doesn't strikes me that there are still fundamental problems even with the final TVR paltform, whether that's lack of torsional rigidity or poor suspension geometry, I don't know.
True. It could be set up too stiff and low. Track-optimised, perhaps.

Anyway, be that as it may, I find it far more intuitive to catch than the Chimaera. As Don says, it's almost telepathic.
I think this is it. I have my Cerb set up soft, compliant to cope with UK roads and as a comfy GT, standard 17" wheels, not the rubber banded 18" smile. A friend has just bought a Sag (and has a Cerb) and it's pretty stiff, but theres not much you can do about that as a standard car without changing suspension bits.

As for benign, mines comfortable at being at high speed, I never felt any dramas at any times I've been over 150-190

Of course the other difference is the seats. Whilst weighing a ton, the early Cerbera seats are far more comfy for long journeys than the later T car seats that also found their way into the later cerbs.

I think there's no doubt that stylistically the Sagaris just has it for looks

Earlier this year I purchased my 10th TVR, a concours 5800 mile Sag in Highland Grey Spectraflair. I kept it for 10 weeks and lost a few quid! It was very clear to me that firstly I wouldn't drive it as it was too nice, but mainly that I couldn't see £75k of value in the car. I miss the lunacy of the styling but that's about all. In every other respect I would rather have a T350T for half the money; if Sags ever drop to 50k again then I'll probably have another, but at £75k I just can't justify it.

I'm delighted I had it simply because I'll never forget the hour I spent looking at every last detail and pinching myself that it belonged to me. Once the novelty wears off however, it's just a slightly crazier T350 at double the price.

A Chevy engine might be good, but I'd say it's a travesty when the unique Speed 6 engine is missing.

Always liked this TVR, especially the size of it, not too big, very tautly drawn styling.

Each to their own, but when I test drove a T350T and a Sagaris back-to-back the same day on the same roads, they were like chalk and cheese, and I bought the Sagaris despite having my plans and budget set on a T350. To me it was worth the extra cost.

What’s the main difference between them, so they share the same, or similar centre spine?

Suspension design, pick up points and the like are the main bits, IIRC

But it is a track-focused car. Far too hot, noisy and cramped for the real world. My wife always knows when I have been in the Sag - she says I smell of sweat, adrenaline and hot car. She loves it...!
I always smell of exhaust and engine oil after driving Her Slagness. Never have got to the bottom of that.
Absolutely - my missus says the same when ive been out a hoon in the Tuscan, 'I stink of car' biggrin

Regarding the Sag - i'd love one, at this point the only reason I haven't got one (instead of the Tuscan) is financial! I think at £50k for a really good one, i'd do it but at the moment, £75k+ is too much.

The Sagaris is just a mental crazy design and a poke in the eye to all the conformist cars out there. I'd have one in a flash If I could but I can't. So I will make do with my 4.5 Cerbera that's mental as well and I love it.

I think as with any TVR, it can come down to individual cars. Perhaps you drove a stinker of a T350. I had two T350Ts, one standard 3.6 with Nitrons and a rather special factory 4 litre S with Ohlins. Both cars were awesome, I couldn’t see the extra value in the Sag, though saying that it was on totally standard suspension.

Ah, well, fair enough I guess. I was comparing two completely standard nearby-new cars and this was back in 2008.

I've never regretted buying the Sag over the T350

I'm not surprised when you consider how the Sag has appreciated! biggrin

S6 development essentially went down two paths - a traditional "bore it out, and make it more reliable" path, championed by TVR Power, and a more fundamental engineering-led path that involved completely reworking the head, timing, etc, as espoused by Racing Green. Don and I went for the latter, so we both have the FFF2 head which has extra oil and coolant pathways, which ditches the Finger Followers for buckets, has a Simplex Timing Chain, Syvecs ECU with knock sensors, and the like. Don's engine also has ACT intake and exhaust mods which mine doesn't which is where he gets the extra horsepower over mine (mine is around 410bhp).

(Apologies to Don if I got any of that wrong)

I'll need to dyno mine sometime. It has...

  • Dom's 4.5 SP6
  • Jule's/Brendan's "special power" airbox
  • Dom's latest MBE ECU
  • One-off sports exhaust from a company that makes them for F1 cars
  • ...etc...
Would be interesting to see what it makes...
