I like this a lot. From the side, the rear light sits a bit awkwardly buy otherwise this looks spectacular.

I generally like the iX as well, but this is that turned upto 11. iX doesn’t need a fake grille though as its all electric. They need to figure out how to deal with that, abstract it somehow for their electric vehicles. Just very tacky having a fake grille.

The rear diffuser seems a tad optimistic, it's going to be way too heavy to ever lift off the ground surely?
Also too tall to make any real use of the diffuser I would think and unlikely to be flat bottomed. I think it's a styling choice.

I'm sure the marketing bumpf will explain how necessary it is, producing 5 megatons of downforce at twice the speed of light, along with the amazing cooling and ram air induction ability of the enormous snout.

I think the rear lights look good from the three quarter view but then don't look quite right from the side. They are really the only thing of interest on the exterior to me though.

Apart from the front lights which, even though sat next to the extravagantly proportioned grill, do appear to be amazingly small! Is that an indication of where they are heading or just concept fantasy?

Ha ha, I was also being facetious of course. Yes; I am sure that there will some form of bumbling justification for having one when they could just say that they think it looks good and so do the punters.

When I saw the thumbnail on the main page, I thought the image of the front of the car was another Meme about BMW grill sizes getting larger and larger....

For an SUV I hate it and like it at the same time, but it certainly doesn't look special enough to be a showcase model of what the M division can achieve, regardless of what category of car this is. I'm not really sure what boundaries this XM pushes, and as a Citroen fanboy it annoys me they've called it the XM!

Head of BMW model planning walks into M division.

“As you know guys we are all really excited about celebrating 50 years of the M division with something really special”

M Engineers: “YES let’s build an M4 GT RS to show those rear engines idiots in Stuttgart how it’s done. We could go to ring and reclaim the lap record, proving we are peak of German performance engineering. Cementing our reputation for years to come. Thank you so much! We will get started.”

Planning: “ hahahhahahhahahha………….. no. We are going to build a nearly 3 tonne SUV aimed squarely at our heartland, rich wives in the USA!”

M Engineers whilst flipping the board room table over: “ARE YOU fkING HIGH”

I like it, very confident exterior design, I doubt most if any of the interior colour scheme will make it to production, the one detail I don't like are the double exhausts.

Call me Craig Revel-Horwood - I have given it a low score (although it seem I am not alone)

Can you think of a less suitable celebration of M's 50th? Absolute madness

I think it's fantastic and very bold. There's no way on earth I would ever consider buying one but someone will and I look forward to seeing it in the wild so I can stand back laugh and say "look at the state of that"

It certainly makes a statement. Only trouble is the statement is "Look at me, I'm so desperate to be different I've lost all taste and my penis is very very small". The Chinese will love it.

Looks somewhere between a Rav4 and a Range Rover. Sketch-a-graphs still aren't good at curves!

It's been 20 years since the original bangle Z4, BMW clearly decided it's time to bring back the old Clarkson 'looks like a pile of dog poo carved with a stick' line

As the owner of a 15 reg 335d m sport touring (which is a lovely motor imo) I can honestly say that I cannot now buy a later BMW. That decision is purely down to the hideous selection of oversized grilles that aren’t even grilles on the latest offerings. Surely I can’t be the only person thinking like that and if so are BMW sales being affected by their current range of fugly cars??

As a serial BMW buyer I'm quite an apologist for the brand. I even like the current M3/M4 in the flesh. Those grilles really don't bother me when I'm standing next to the car so I don't know why all the photos are 'worms-eye' views.

But this, this is hilariously bad. Did BMW get Elon's crayon drawing truck 'design' team to create this mess?

I like the seats though.

Urgh. I had no idea the future was BMW driving over a human face forever.
