Honorable mention for the new Tesla SUV thing too, I don't know what it's called, but man it's a lump of junk.
Why does the Tesla design dept think that creating a smoothed off soap bar of hideousness from aprox 1980 is acceptable? Is it an Elon Musk EV joke? How much design blandness can we get away with?
It will probably become one of, it not, the best selling car in the world in a couple of years time, so maybe that will answer your question?

I'm not so sure, a lot of other manufacturers are catching Tesla up, look at the recent Korean efforts, in some ways better cars than the Tesla. Other brands are nipping at Tesla too and gave much better dealer/servicing networks and are cheaper to buy.

If it’s a ‘sensor panel’ it’s not a grille then is it?
If a manufacturer decides to glue an object in a trademarked shape on the front of a bigger object, then the first object is whatever the hell they decide to call it. smile
Yes it’s a fake grille.
I think that was the other poster’s point, that you then took issue with
No, I took issue with the other poster's assertation that it's purely for styling, and called it bks which in hindsight wasn't really on, so sorry for that, Megaflow.

I did at least offer a nugget of info to explain why I thought it was bks as the kidney-grille has a purpose other than Shock & Awe and you know, this is a car forum and all so I thought that technical aspect might be of some interest, but instead we appear to be arguing about whether a sensor panel can be called a grille and the truth is, I don't honestly give a fk.

Big engined SUV’s from any manufacturer & Supercars as built by Ferrari & Lamborghini (or similar). Invariably driven (slowly) round city centres to show off how much money the owner has. Nothing more tasteless than ostentatious displays of wealth.
Apart from reverse snobbery generated by that large chip on one's shoulder of course.

While lots of the cars posted have been ugly, ala the BMW IX, I’m not sure it’s tasteless

Tasteless is different to ugly, it’s a mix of brash design, chintz and almost certainly only ever driven by chavs

The GLE coupe is well up there for me, ugly, brash, pointless and massive

But the winner for me has to be the transit custom MS RS, just awful.

Horrid max power body kit, it’s not got a engine worthy of anything as brash as that as it’s 180hp and a awful gearbox, only ever driven by meatheads usually called Steve and usually sporting a badly spaced numberplate, it’s not sporty so why’s it got the body kit? And usually has a interior from a fairground ride

Had something very similar to this trying to park in my boot on the way to the post office yesterday, thought his little red face was going to explode as I was doing 29 in a 30. He gave me a very angry look when we pulled in. I popped into the post office and he parked up and went into an estate pub.

Yes, there is something perverse about a pretend sporty tradesman’s van, same for the ‘roid rage tarted-up twin cabs. GLE coupe also awful (as is the X6).

The X6 wins it for me, just look at the absolute state of it.

It might be slightly less ugly than the iX (in the way some bits of the Titanic are slightly less underwater than others) but it's more vulgar. All the grace of a pregnant hippo and the side profile of a dog taking a dump.

On the other hand, I think the VW T6.1 is a very nice looking van. If I had use for one and could afford a day van I would have it in an instant smokin

For a car - good proportions, stance, surfacing and graphics. Even if that allows for subjective interpretation, there's over a century of car design to form some kind of consensus from.

The iX has an awkward stance and proportions (almost like the platform doesn't fit the car), the slabby, flabby wheel arches are clumsy, the surfacing of the bumpers is fussy and unpleasant and at odds with the featureless sides, the entire C-pillar area is a disaster, the lights are mean (more so next to that mutant "grille"), the door handles are terrible. It's just lumpen and undynamic.

Do you really think the iX is an example of good design?
I think that if you trying to appraise the iX using historical design rules that evolved over 100 years of ICE cars, then it might fall short.

EVs steer the design in ways that ICE cars don't.

The high waistline from the underfloor battery, the need for every last bit of aero efficiency to be found, the need to close off cooling apertures we are traditionally used to seeing, tapering roofline, etc.

These things are forcing ALL manufacturers to design cars that we are unaccustomed to.

I don't think you can show me a full size EV SUV that is an example of good design using your traditional yardsticks. Audi and Mercs are either bland, unadventurous or amorphous blobs. The I-pace is inoffensive but its starting to look quite dated to me.

Personally I find the BMW approach just a bit more interesting and I do think it will stand the test of time better than most.

Teslas looks like an appliance.

An actually that's just what an EV SUV is. The performance of the design in terms of efficiency, materials consumption and cost are ultimately now more important than how it looks.

The design as you see it will sell in the quantities that BMW have targeted, to buyers who are perfectly happy with the way it looks, you can be pretty sure of that.

They are just not posting on PistonHeads, generally.

My point is that this car looks the way it does for good business reasons, and I suggest that subconsciously some people are uncomfortable that their tastes are no longer the most important tastes out there, as far as new car buyers go.

All you can really do about it is write some strongly-worded internet posts, which is what we are seeing here.

The Transit is imo a perfect machine. Superb to drive, perfect 6 speed gearbox , hill assist light clutch, nice roomy interior, and steers better than many cars. Our Transit (2.2 190hp , 370lb ft ) is pretty quick and brilliant on long runs. It's the kind of van you can do many hundreds of miles in without aches and pains .
We've done a dozen euro runs as far as Greece ( 130kph in top at 2000pm )in ours and really can't find any other van I'd want to change it for. We used to have a 2.4 pd Transporter but the Transit wipes the floor with the VW, it even uses the same basic bodyshell from 1996.
Ref the MRST other colours like the met orange suit it far better than the blue..

Mercedes are king of interior chintz.
I saw one of those out the wild the other day and discovered that the awful grill, isn’t even actually a grill, purely there for ‘styling’.

eek
The absolute worst thing about this car is that someone has gone into a BMW showroom, looked at it, and gone “yep that’s the one for me”. A person that is allowed to vote, and is eligible for jury service.

Audi SQ5.

It's an SUV, no it's not it's a sporting SUV.
That doesn't handle well, doesn't do comfort well unless you spec it with a £7k upgrade to model with air suspension, isn't that quick, doesn't make a nice noise ( as it's diesel) and costs a fortune. It's bloody enormous but not much space in rear due to sloping roof. And is not sporty to drive.
It's a marketing person's wet dream of a car.

It's vehicles like this that give ICE cars a bad name.

I would assume that anyone buying that monstrosity, is not someone who appreciates fine art and visits galleries on a regular basis.
