what I would like to know is what windshield he is using as an original from McLaren would cost the earth and you your local fitter in unlikely to have one gavering dust in the back of his van. Compare the opening with an original car

Very good point, didn't even think of that. Presumably though you could get one made especially, it wouldn't be cheap but it beats ringing up Woking and asking what they have going spare in the store cupboard...[

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII MR FQ-400 makes c400bhp from 2.0 litres from the factory with a full manufacturers warranty. And that was 5 years ago.
the f1 was NA though and the japs just use a turbo to boost bhp. proper bhp* comes from design and engineering not from some whoosh bang add on.find me a NA road car that can produce 200 bhp form a 1 litre engine, then 400bhp from a 2 litre engine.... i'll wait here its ok.....
- if you too were brought up by my father you would realise that Colin Chapman is god
It seems people cannot count - if you count the inlet pipes then it looks like a straight 16 to me LOL
Bloomin good effort if you ask me and if this could be produced as a Kit then people would buy it.
There is something called an Aeon (or something like that) which is built around the kent area that has the 3 seat configuration but runs engines with 4 cylinders.

Getting a screen made involves making a very precise mould for the glass guys to work from and I can only think of one place in the UK and one in the US that makes custom glass, and yes it cost a whole heap

I really have to take my hat of to this guy / these guys.
On Jalopnik you can see the vast amount of work that has done into these scratch built "replicas".There are at least 2, one V12 One V8.
The number of man hours and the amount of perseverence that has gone into these is mind boggling.especially when you look at the workshop they are in, you couldn't get further from the clinical environment the originals were created in.
They appear to have been built with a great deal of ingenuity and plain old hard work, and the engineering is sound, not whimsical, built stoutly, on a budget, but no corners cut. I love the cars and can't understate my admiration and respect for the creators.

I completely agree, though Jalopnik seems to diss him. BTW I looked at your profile, and judging by what you did to your 928, you're pretty ingenious yourself. On Jalopnik you can see the vast amount of work that has done into these scratch built "replicas".There are at least 2, one V12 One V8.

Very interesting.
But with that level of ability he could have done something a bit more individual than copy some one elses design. If I had anywhere to do a project like that (and I'd love to) I'd do my own styling but each to their own.
It looks as if he's made a buck and two rolling chassis in three separate lock ups. Possibly this is a serious attempt to start a kit car business?
The chassis would need a rethink though, There is no bracing across the engine bay or rear suspension for example. It's nothing that couldn't be tackled by a post prototype rethink and won't matter at all if he's only trying to make one for himself. As it is though he'd have a stronger, simpler and stiffer design if he'd put the same weight of steel into a properly X or K braced ladder frame.
All in all an impressive project. Is it really a one man project?

What an interesting article, but there may be an interesting explaination as to why this car looks quite as accurate as it does.....
According to an ex-employee of mine, who now works for McLaren, they aledgedly lost a pretty much complete set of moulds which were free issued to a 3rd party composite moulding firm I later reserected. They were used to manufacture components for the F1 GTR race car.
This particular gentleman was personally responsible for the manufacture of the GTR panels. When we did some work for the F1 project some years later, this guy told the story of the missing tooling and that all new moulds had had to have been made.
So perhaps the missing tooling made it to Poland?
