I'd also wager that the GTR is the car that Audi are positioning this car against, not the M3.
I reckon they're targetting the AMG CLS / E Class Coupé rather than the more focussed GT-R

It sounds great and I'm glad they kept the V8. We've had an S5 since the launch day (07 plate wink ) and we're currently not quite managing the will to trade it in.

nice car, but is it really worth 8 grand more than an M3 which i reckon will be just as quick and probably more fun to drive?
Which itself is 10k overpriced and BMW have come to the same conclusion by giving huge discounts!
Discounts aside it's not massively more expensive than an M3 of similar spec.

M-DCT and EDC which cost an extra 4k on an M3 are standard on an RS5. List for the M3 coupe is about £52k, so there's about 1500 quid in it really.

4.2 V8 in the RS4 and A8s? Erm, why omit the (twin turbo) lump in the RS6?? Fantastic looking car btw, pours wee all over a 3 series coupe, and it ain't a UR Quattro, cos that's progress pal!!

I'd agree with the AMG statement - If you have a current M3, what would you change it for? A big part of the reason why I bought an M3 was the awesome V8 engine and BMW in their wisdom appear to have decided that the next M3 will be a glorified 335i - Yes I know the emissions story isn't going away but I like a NA engine, so next M3 isn't even on my shopping list ditto the next M5. GTR is a beast but I couldn't use it everyday for business or even the family because I suspect the ride would be too much of an issue. Which leaves the C63 AMG or the RS5. I do like the C63 AMG but IMHO it's not quite as good a driver's car as the M3 and if I go on the configurator to build one to my spec it's about £65k. 911's are nice but the spec is just shocking and an outrageous rip-off, which leaves this RS5. Nice interior, usable performance, PDQ and IMHO looks very nice. It's got to at least make it onto the shopping list. All I can say is that I'm very interested!

Straight from the horses mouth so to speak, this car is aimed squarely at M3 drivers IMO.

So, here's the question:

OR

Both c.450bhp, both 4wd, Audi slightly more expensive.

I think it may be more pertinent to ask though:

OR

Id go for the audi im guessing the GTR is faster and has more grip on a track but in the real world the Audi looks so much classier IMO

its no elise is it

bring back proper sports cars

these monster BHP estates are just tedious and nothing to do with proper driving or cars

if you want a real world car get a Volvo which will be far more useable than this thing and a lot cheaper to run

Audi 'RS cars' ... for people who like OWNING things rather than driving and being connected to the road. You may as well go out and buy x30 ipods and just quench your materialism that way. You'll save yourself a shedload of dosh.

Is it possible for Audi to release a car and not mention the UR Quattro?

Stunning motor. But isn't this just an S5 but with different bumpers/updated styling?

While the audi's interior stays better, you should compare press photo's to press photo's, and not some amateur photo:

Anyway, I still think audi can do more to make their interior "better", it's still so... black. Appart from the seats, I really don't see the appeal in this interior.

I'd take the GT-R anyday, because I prefer performance over badge.

Because the twin turbo V8 wasnt an FSI engine - made a noticeable difference to the fuel consumption...interestingly they say this V8 is derived from the V10 and not the V8 in the R8 when the R8 V8 used the same V8 as the last RS4...

Also, when I test drove the RS4 I asked about a Tiptronic box for it (manual only in the last RS4) and the Audi chap said they didnt have a Tip box strong enough for the grunt (note there was no Audi Tip box for the R8 - just the Lambo derived R-Tronic) - so seems like they have been burning the midnight oil...wonder what bits they have taken from the V10 to make it breathe/rev higher...

For me, why want manual when the tip does all you need (note - the functions of the column paddles and the shift stick are different if the previous RS6 box was an indicator ie the paddle held the gear for about 30 secs but the shift stick held it in gear constantly for downhill engine braking or approaching bends...

I think this RS5 is alot more 'bang for yr buck' than the R8 - and the same price as the old V8 RS6...dont fancy the ride on the optional 20" rims though!

If your quick enough to fully use the performance of either then maybe you should be driving in a race series. they are both able to do twice the speed limit so its of little importance which is faster

OK so what if you can only have one car? and don't fancy being rattled around in an Elise everyday but fancy going for spirited drive on a Sunday? Or what if your commuting every day and want to blast down the last few miles to your house? so by your rational everyone should either have a light weight sports car or a family Saloon? what a load of boll0x...."proper driving".
