Both.

I'd want a couple of new cars, and a collection of second hand/used cars to restore/modify/track etc.

Nothing new I'd rush out to buy. First thing I'd get would be a 68 Dodge Charger R/T. Preferably black. Gotta scratch that muscle car itch. cool

Than maybe a Merc C63 for knocking about in. Not brand new though, I'd rather somebody else pay for the first year's depreciation...

Chosen classifieds for me in the main, very few new cars I'd like.

Well I live just round the corner from William Loughran's so it would be rude not to nip in and see what he had on offer, probably leave with a GT2 or GT3 RS.
Then get finding a F40, M5 Touring and a MK2 to build into a track toy.

Then maybe to the Land Rover dealers for a Range Rover S/C and a new Defender.

I'd get myself a kit car, and spend some time putting it together while considering my options, in my newly acquired luxuriously kitted-out garage. Concerning big lottery wins, I heard someone once say "save a third, spend a third, give a third away." Although if it actually happened I would lose all rational thought, spend "half on booze and birds, and waste the rest." (just like George Best) smile

ETA: Classifieds for the PH stuff, brand new for shopping car/hack for driving through bump-risky areas.

As soon as the cash hit my account?

1. I'd be contacting Alex Kidston to source my ultimate cars

2. I'd looking through the Octane classifieds for the daily hack (probably a Mk 1 Audi RS2)

Maybe the occasional visit to DK Engineering and The Hairpin Company for stuff that flicks my switch but falls in between the above sources.

So, all s/h really. Although, for a new car, I would love to visit Horatio and individually spec my own Zonda. Sadly not possible now, even if I had the requisite folding.

I've changed my mind, I think I would invest the money in PH (or buy it I don't know if 5 mil would be enough) get Garlick to give me a job then I could get rides with Ken Block, get nice drives to Wilton House etc etc

Ok I'm pissed but on reflection, Garlick you do have one of the best jobs ever!!! biggrin

If you were a millionaire.........would you rush to your local shiny showroom, chequebook in hand, or head to your chosen classifieds?
Instant dealer purchases.

Audi RS6 5.0 V10 Avant, obviously with the Sportec package that ups it to 700BHP and 584lb-ft.

Land Rover Defender (probably a fully specced expedition 110 though)

Aston Martin V12 Vanquish

Then, after that... it would be a constant scouring of auctions, dealers and private sales to collect some other little beauties.

TVR Cerbera (the last one ever made).
TVR Griffith (a genuine BV)
At least one Paul Stephens Porsche.
Bentley Turbo R
Custom spec Luego Viento 5.0 supercharged 4x4.
Lamborghini Diablo
Etc.

biggrin

I think Id have a GTR and ship it to Japan for Smokey Nagata and the Top Secret chaps to fettle to about 1000bhp. Then I'd have Tuscan a I've wanted one since they first came out. I'd have a Zonda f roadster for posing on special occassions.

I'd have a ford Section in my vast garage though, in there there would be a Racing Puma, Series 1 Escort RS Turbo, Escort Cossie, RS 200, Sierra R500 in Texaco Colours, and probably a GT.

That'll do for now I think.

A grand a week on food and pampering?. £30K a year on travel and holidays?. I would suggest your priorities are seriously flawed.

This is all the holiday I need and I am sure I can find room in the corner for a microwave and a toaster to knock up some beans on toast should I find myself dipping into the shopping budget for petrol money. hehe

Why are you getting no return on the £1m put away for rainy days?

It'd all be in the same account and bring £200K a year, surely?

Plus you know damn well that a large proportion of people on this thread would rather "suffer" a £750k house and a quarter million pound garage. I know I would.

Oh, and that'll be another grand a week to try and lose in made up figures then hehe

I've given this some thought, and the first car I'll buy when Garlick gives me a million quid will be the TVR Cerbera Speed 12, for many more reasons than I can be arsed to type on my phone. Then the new Atom V8. Then a black DBS as my daily car, with a totally illegal exhaust system. Lastly, I simply MUST get hold of the top spec Esthi.

You mean you wouldn't simply keep it with the other 3 million?

£200,000 annual interest would certainly take my mind off rainy days, even slumming it in a £750k house biggrin

Tonks

You're making the assumption that we all live within the M25, and that we're all married.

I'm not married, and I live in the west coast of Scotland.

Even £400k buys a very nice place in the country up here.

oh and my immediate list?

360CS
Caterham R500 / or Atom 300
NSX Type R

It's all about differing priorities.

From a personal perspective, I'd much rather live in a reasonably modest place, either in a small village (my current location) or in the country and have access to some interesting cars.

Eta - just to reinforce my point - http://www.corumproperty.co.uk/property/2010060915...

That was just a very quick search, purely on price, to demonstrate that (up here at least) £400k doesn't land you in the local "Beiruit"

Agree with much that you say Tonks, but your money goes a long way up here on the west coast. 4 to 500k up here gets you something like this

http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/prope...

Very nice little town as well.

Down south this kind of Money is a 1 bedroom flat in a crap area.

I think you missed my point Tonker - we seem to be slightly at cross purposes a little?

I'm messing about a bit anyway, but I'm serious in principle, I totally understand your point about the limitations on the cash - especially with some of the endless metal cited. But it is a fantasy thread after all smile

Also, I genuinely think that your perceptions of how a similarly massive amount money would or should or even could be spent over a lifetime is as clouded as you seem to think everyone else's is.

No disrespect intended - I know you are a smart chap and I often agree fully with the things you say - but you make a lot of assumptions in your assertions where you simply don't have the information.

I know precisely how much I can live on and how much I could "get by on" and so forth.

Your own values don't apply to me.

I would wager this is the case for many here.

No matter how you swing it, for many, £5,000,000 (and less) could mean permanent retirement and a comfortable house with nice cars in the garage.

Odd view of housing having to be immense just because your a millionaire. £750K in a very nice (nicest I think) area of the Thames Valley will get you more than enough house, indeed this for £650K looks great.
