Every review I've seen questions the sanity of the purchasers. It's direct competition seems to be the X5, which most rate considerably better.

I must admit when I caved in and bought one for my wife I was under a similar impression but having lived with it for 18 months it's been superb. Very underrated car in my opinion and well worth the OP looking at if it fulfils his requirements.

Pretty simple: seven seater 4x4. Q7, XC90, Disco3, X5. Maybe a Japanese equivalent. Trick is to find a low mileage one for that money.
Why low mileage? If the OP will only add 2k pa a cheaper, higher mileage car (with history) bought now could become a low-mileage one after a few years ownership, making more financial sense to me
Cos the OP said he prefers low mileage cars.

Not yet!!

We already have a nice estate car (which this will be replacing) and want something a bit different. We have agreed that we quite fancy something with a more laid back, higher driving position (I still have my Alpina D3 for everyday use anyway) so have pretty much ruled out Audi A6's etc. I now quite like the X5 (yes, I know) and the VW Touareg but both of these are only 5 seaters.

Other than 'proper' 4x4's, tank the XC90 does appear to be one of the few 7 seater's in this class. So, as much as I hate to say it (that the OH may have been right that is...) we have now narrowed it down to almost certainly getting an XC90 irked.

We are going to see a silver 2006 XC90 Diesel on Saturday which we have been offered for just under £13k... not a bad price I think. The only problem is that it is an 'S' rather than an 'SE' - I think this just means that it doesn't get electric seats and the full leather (which isn't too much of a problem assuming that the black cloth / half leather (or vinyl?) looks alright in the flesh) and it only gets 17" rather than the 18" alloys nerd. Again, not exactly a deal breaker.

As it is a 2006 model it also gets a slightly more powerful version of the D5 2.4 TDi engine; 185bhp rather than 168. If we decide that we really needed leather, then we could pick up a whole interior for around £650 from a salvage yard anyway.

I will let you all know how we get on!!

Have you considered the Hyundai Santa Fe?
Not the brand name your wife may desire but quite capable.
The diesel can be remapped and comes with 7 seats.
CDX spec has leather.
Got one for the missus and have been impressed.
If 7 seats not very necessary, what about Lexus RX 300?
