About 4/6d (that's 22.5p) per gallon in 1970. Ho-hum.

The first time I bought petrol to put in a car it was 6s 2d pre decimalisation, which equates to 31p per gallon = 6.8p/litre.

The first time I put petrol in my own vehicle was post decimalisation and that was ~38p per gallon. which also equates to 8.4 p/litre.

Remember that as a sprog anyone who ordered a quids worth from the attendant was considered a bit flash.

I don't remember, but I found a diary entry where I was outraged at having to pay 91ppl.

In 1966 or abouts I used to get a gallon of two stroke for my Lambretta GT200 for 5 bob and get a bit of change. Happy days???? but I was earning about £5 a week as an apprentice and had to give my mum £2 a week keep.

When I got my first motorcycle in 1966 I think it was around 2 shillings and 6 pence (half a crown) for half a gallon of two stroke mix

That sounds about right. Two-Stroke mix was always a bit dearer than just petrol due to the addition of two-stroke oil, (probably just a light engine oil as the old 2-strokes weren't that fussy - a bit fussy, yes, but not unduly so. Seem to recall paying 4/9d for Shell Regular around that time. The old Vauxhall used to overheat on Shell Super at 4/11d per gallon. Eeeh, them were t'days, tha knows. You could leave t'house wi a Tanner in yer pocket, take a lass t'pictures, share five Woodbines, have a fish supper on t'way 'ome and still have enough for t'tram fare to work t'following mornin'. An there were nowt wrong wi ricketts and cold baths once a week. Made a man of yer - even if you were a lass.

I passed in 92 but didn't buy my first car until 2000, so can't remember what petrol cost before then as I bought it rarely (mum's car / car I shared with brother) - but I remember it being just under 80ppl in 2000. It can't have stayed at that for 5 years can it??

I do remember in about 88 there being a big fuss about it getting close to £2/gallon - 40ppl?

I can't remember the exact price per furlong or whatever, but I do recall that a fiver's worth of four star in the tank of my Mk1 Cavalier would do me for the week (getting to work and back).

That was 1986 or so.

I remember having an old triumph 1300 fwd for around the fields on our farm when I was 12, and having to walk the three miles to the garage for fuel.
We had the normal old metal 1 gallon castrol tin and used to just be able to get £2 in it. I filled one up the other day, £8 WTF!!!
That was 1980.

September 2008 1.12 a litre apparently dropped under 1 for a bit after that but it has always been rather pricey for me from day 1

I remember about this sort of price when I passed my test in 2001, maybe a little less, 74-75ppl.

I've said that I paid 33p a gallon at the Supercortemaggiorie and my brother used to pay 6/6 - gal or 3 gals for a quid "and keep the change" but I was thinking about when I was about 10 and I'd go with dad to fill the Anglia on a Saturday morning. He'd get 4 or 5 gallons of ShellMex and shots. No idea what he paid but it would have been mid 60's so perhaps 4/- gallon?

I also passed my test in 1996 and bought my first car. Petrol was 55.9 a litre then so 75p a litre is wrong for that year. Take a look at this: http://www.ukpia.com/files/pdf/unleaded-95-petrol-...
You're probably right mate. I have a st memory. It was probably circa 57p/ ltr that I paid, rather than 75p.
