See how worthless this contribution is?
Sometimes a 21 yr old needs a different view point / balance.

Its not completely worthless IMO.

Plenty of great metal for £8k so why at that age blow the full £15k.

Lets just hope its not a loan....

Why? Because perhaps if he has decided thats what he can afford then we should just stick to the title rather than becoming financial advisers.

I know this will sound rude, but forget the fact you have a private plate which will dictate the age of the car you buy. 15K will get you some fantastic older stuff than a basic 'hot hatch' which you are suggesting - e.g. boxster, S2000, even 911 (assuming insurance doesn't kill you).
21 and insuring an S2000, Boxster or 911. Really?

For reference, I got one of my chaps at work who is 22 (albeit with only 3 months driving under his belt) to see how much it would cost to insure him on my Subaru. The cheapest? £22,000.

I think you are having a laugh suggesting those cars.
I'm 22, only passed my test at 19, insure a Shelby GT500 tuned to 900hp(insurer knows) and Porsche Cayman on separate policies for less than 3k total.

I also have insurance for a Testarossa lined up, 2.7k quote with no NCB. 911 Carrera quotes were coming back between 1.9-3k for me.

Just wanted to illustrate as others have pointed out, it varies wildly from car to car, so there is usually a way to get your hands on a solid performance car at a young age without going too OTT on insurance if you do your research.

Citizens of Kuwait and the UAE will pay anything for the very highest online status, not only tangible things. If you can provide that to them in a way that saves them thousands of hours without spending those hours yourself or paying someone to work them, you can do well. That's the only hint I'm giving.

I went for more adult cars.

17 I had a Mazda6 2.0d Sport
Then few days after my 18th birthday I got a 53 330d sport touring, kept that for nearlly 2 years.
Just before my 21st birthday, again a few days, I got a 330i sport 07.

Guess I will keep this for a couple of years, will see.

I don't like hatchy things tbh.

All on fleet insurance btw, cost between £600-£700 for all above cars.

To all those saying insurance would be ridiculous on cars mentioned here, it's not true (at least for some of them).

I'm 21 and looking for a new car (albeit significantly cheaper) and currently insurance on my MX5 is about £800 (modified and with 3 points). Changing to something much, much quicker doesn't really put the insurance up that much, it's other factors...

E.g A Honda S2000 is a nightmare to insure, cheapest £2300. Probably due to how many are crashed, stolen etc.

But a VX220 Turbo? £1000. (Despite a base model Elise being well over £2k.

So, based on my experience of looking and pricing up insurance my suggestions would be an MX5 2.0, VX220 (maybe a bit raw?) or a Boxster. If you need more than 2 seats, then an Rx8 or the fastest 3 series you can afford (E36 M3?).

I ended up "spending" 8500 with some finance on very managable payments and put more money into my new business

A 2.5 or 2.7 986 Boxster is only about group 16-17, which is little different to many of the range of hot hatches and available with reasonable miles and history in good condition for half the OP's intended budget and also less likely to lose their entire value over three years which balances against a newer hot hatch losing 50% over the same time and mileage.

The difference in initial outlay should more than adequately cover any difference in maintenance and fuel costs - if any given the thirst of a Focus ST for one or even the early MINI Cooper Ss that would hover around 30, a Boxster will little worse if any, plus a bit more dynamically interesting than a hot hatch IMO.

You could spend £8k on a decent condition E46 M3, although the fuel then drops to ST levels but insurance will be 911 ballpark, so I appreciate that would likely rule it out. A late E46 330Ci with low miles and in good condition is again half the OPs budget or less.

Closer to £15k and things like E92 335is come into the ballpark and again insurance group 17. In manual guise, they're not even that thirsty and practically as quick as any M3 before it. Normal BMW rather than M-taxed running costs too.
