Different folks have different ideas on what a 'decent' living is.
Average salary in the UK is circa. £30k; add a £15k on-the-side 2nd job and if you're a person who doesn't frivolously spend money you can happily jump into a used Aston or R8 level car with ease.

Seriously, just walk into the dealer's. They are a shop. The staff's sole purpose for existing is to cater for you as the potential customer.
As long as you avoid the 'what car do you drive now, sir?' question. They tend to make their excuses after that wink

Eh? 45k before tax and running an R8 or an Aston?

Not with a house/kids/life/food (delete as appropriate) I wouldn't think!

Only if you let them though. biggrin

Just swerve their question by asking them what they drive, tell them that their answer is interesting, that the car they mention seems very popular or if they need re-boxing then just remark that your cleaner has one of those and then carry on.

But the people in the Knightsbridge shop have always seemed pleasant people and when I've been in I would swear I was the only person in the showroom capable of stringing a coherent sentence together in English. smile

I was just trying to illustrate that people do live in entirely different worlds.

It may be that my estimate on living in greater London isn't entirely accurate. Or my understanding of R8 ownership. So,once you take out non-frivolous outgoings such as rent/mortgage at London rates, bills from £45K a year, there's enough for a 40K R8? I guess that'd be a long term finance thing?

It comes up a bit at car shows like Auto Sport. I like to have a good nose around the cars, which obviously means the people on the stands will go into sales mode. I always tell them what I drive when they ask.

Goes one of two ways. They either make their excuses or shuffle off to someone who's more of their 'target'. Or, chat a bit. I don't mind either way. Back when I was running an XR4x4, I ran into a chap on a Porsche stand that had a serious love affair with his in the early '90s. Car fans are car fans.

You and I both know that pre-tax £45K won't get you into an Aston or R8 'with ease'* but it does an excellent job of highlighting the disconnect between some of these YouTubers and people that have to live in the real world.

*Short of perhaps loading up on a eye watering finance deal and living with parents, which again isn't something a sane person in the real world would ever consider doing, or even suggesting.

It's not even 3k per month and you could easily be £2k a month for rent , food and commute costs before any other living costs in London. Shmee dream world.

Definitely one of his better offerings and especially pertinent to this thread. More like this please, dreaming teenagers might be left a bit disappointed but adults will appreciate the calmer style and honesty.

I cant walk into McLaren dealers cold - they would laugh me out of the place the second they look at me - if I open my mouth they will probably hand over the keys and say "don't hurt me I am too young to die!!".
Obviously, that's a load of silly drivel but it's incredibly sad to find that someone would have such an utterly low opinion of themselves or such a chip on their shoulder about others that they could possibly think or believe such tosh.

Seriously, just walk into the dealer's. They are a shop. The staff's sole purpose for existing is to cater for you as the potential customer. In reality, it's you who is looking down on yourself and you who is laughing you out of a shop that sells things.

It reminds me of the PHers who always claim people are looking down on them. No one can look down on you unless you chose to be their worn in your own mind.
There's a flip side to that. Some years ago I walked in to a BMW "shop" to politely enquire about an M3. The shop assistant who was early 20s, refused to allow me to drive one unless I bought one. So I bought one, from somewhere else. I've had a number of similar experiences from people who do just what red_slr said. It isn't that uncommon, sadly. What I would say is that higher end dealers don't make assumptions or pass judgements IME - I believe they are trained that way......

ETA.

No disrespect to Tim but the way he talks, always wears a shirt with a collar, very expensive post code - its obvious - to me anyway what his background is and that's that really. Or some such. That's just life. JWW is the same, well spoken, well educated, clearly has a few quid regardless of some poxy website doing videos.

SOL - he is a normal guy making a go of it. STG similar. If youtube stops tomorrow JWW and S150 will still drive round in nice cars, they just wont make videos any more.

They don't want to say it - because they don't want to come across as arrogant or "do a Ratner" but they are rich. Proper rich. They can afford the cars, so stop asking how / why etc! They just can. Alejandro Salomon is only but one more example.
I think the underlying point is disguised by additional material here.

If there were some financial assistance provided by the BOMAD(Bank Of Mum And Dad) then it's no more than many people in such a position would do if they were so able. However, it does seem to be an issue acknowledging that.....if it happened.....to any of these people.

"No disrespect to Tim" before going off on a number of disrespectful points! Simply put, if I didn't run Shmee150 then I wouldn't be driving the cars I'm driving - this has all come from growing a business off the back of a YouTube channel. I know it's a hard concept to grasp but it is actually possible!

Both JWW and Ale have run and continue to run companies independently of their YouTubing; neither makes videos for their full time living at this stage although Ale is pushing that way. Both SOL and STG have built it like me as a hobby turning into their jobs and are making strong progress and success.
I am not saying it to be disrespectful - that's why I said that - but I have been around the block enough times to know, generally, where someone comes from and feel free to correct me if I am wrong of course in your case.

You seem to get irritated by people asking you where your money comes from but when I tell people to stop asking you don't seem to like that either. Personally I don't know why people are bothered TBH - no one jumps on Alejandro with the questions.. anyway, I reckon you should pop that collar on your next vid.... would be awesome biggrin

Also, whilst I have you, why would you chose to be a sole trader? That seems really odd given the benefits of being LTD given the assets you are writing down with depreciation. Ok the McLaren and GT4 will appreciate but your interest on Ferrari Finance must be a factor also. Anyways just a thought..

I did specifically say with no dependents. Example for a young-20s person in London:

£45k income is £33,600 after tax, roughly £2,800 a month.

Shared flat with 2 friends around £800 a month each somewhere in Zone 2/3

£10k deposit on a £50k R8 from savings, 48 months @ 7%, £20k balloon; £595 per month.

R8 in the garage, and £1,400 a month for living which is more than enough from my experience!

If I work 40 hours a week, I can work another 20 to take home maybe a grand a month, whilst paying my rent/mortgage, keeping the kids clothed and fed, going out once in a while?

Nonsense. You talk as if the average Joe could afford to run these things. They can't.

You've chosen to prioritise owning overpriced status symbols. No shame on you for that, it's your decision to take. Others might prefer to look after their families and not put trinkets ahead of everday life.

Best of luck to you, but you're a kid with a nice car, and not a lot else.

Doesn't include any personal pension contributions but anyway, Clearly from your ff video you don't put a lot of miles on a supercar (r8, ff) without nailing seriously into that £1400. Fuel, tyres, garaging of the car...
