I know it's crass to discuss such matters... but are short plates in the US equally as expensive as over here?
No, in my state (NC) it’s about $35 for whatever. You can have custom backgrounds, some reserved for veterans etc. punctuation too. I was tempted to have “bks!” as a Jasper Carrot tribute. We have a limit of 8 characters but I don’t believe there’s a lower limit.
That seems crazy-cheap given all the options, but then I guess there is less demand for 'rare' plates if one can have whatever one wants in the first place.

The punctuation aspect is interesting, though. Does that mean one could request '.!;:'"?.', for example? That would seem somewhat difficult to read at speed... lol

Interesting question - I may try that!

I asked for two plates to be issued earlier this year. They were (both 3x3 dateless), but you can't buy them, the DVLA submit them to their on line auctions and you have to bid for them. I was outbid on both by RegTransfers, who still own both and have them up for sale at 3x what they paid.
That's, er, nice of them... rolleyes
I requested a plate to be issued by DVLA. In the months before auction I was contacted by regtransfers suggesting that the same plate “might” be available and to register my interest. Fairly sure I was bidding against them in the auction and then after I won, I was then sent more emails suggesting that they might be able to sell me the plate for 3 times what I had paid. I was half tempted to email and say I was interested so that they’d then contact me to sell my own plate back to myself.

V6 XED - X being close to a Z sound. It was on the car when I bought it so I can’t take any credit.

Please excuse the marks around the headlights, I’d just finished polishing them!

Helmet on, await the sizing/spacing/unacceptable police to beat me up, but I imported this and it needed a new reg. I used to own V7TTE but that's no longer available. I think it's more appropriate than any variation of random numbers and letters...

There seems to be 'private', 'dateless', 'cherished' etc for UK plates, nice things to have if they mean something to you, I prefer the non misspaced and shorter plates, however if someone wants to take the chance and alter theirs that's up to them.

Headlights have come up well. Mind if I ask what product you used? Have used a few over the years with mixed results.

This one I think:

Link

Comes with a wool pad to be used with a standard chuck drill, Plast-X compound, and three grades of wet and dry if the oxidisation is particularly bad.

In the photo I had used the wet and dry pads. Really the headlights need to be treated with UV protection after too otherwise you’ll be doing it again a couple of years down the line.

Bit of fun on a fun car, and I wasn’t all that keen on the original plate.

Excellent plate in my eyes! Enjoy!

Well, it turns out that special characters are not counted to test that a plate is unique. So A?!’ Is the same as A. I’d guess that a plate of all special characters is effectively blank! https://www.ncdot.gov/dmv/title-registration/licen...

That seems to be the most confusing system ever! lol

If it has to have at least one letter or number, and I guess that all the single-letter and single-number plates have gone (surely?), you'd need to work through AA-ZZ, 10-99, and A1-Z9 to see if a two-character plate remains on which to use as a basis for punctuation characters etc., before moving on to 100-999 etc. etc. for potential three-character options..

Except surely it is cooler to just have the two/three characters in the first place if it is available??

I think they've assumed that only letters and numbers are memorable so are the important things, and the punctuation etc. will just get ignored!

Edit: I wonder if FOFF has gone - could add three special characters and a space somewhere in that for amusing effect... lol

YAC was owned by my wife and is the first 3 letters of her surname and has owned A1 since her late teens. Her family all have YAC plates.

i.e. 5 litre, Roger - you get the idea. Was less than £150 IIRC

Only plate i've ever bought.

My other two cars have unfortunate letters, one BJ, the other VD.. What can you do? I'm not buying a special plate for a Yeti and a Transit :-)
Was this car sold with that number? Looks like it's being used for a scam at the moment.

Or does anyone know the actual whereabouts of the black Griff bearing that number?

They are called private because the alphanumeric characters assigned to a vehicle, is privately selected and not randomly assigned.

I've always called them vanity plates because really that's what they are (I have 2)

Here's my 2016 Lexus RC 300h F Sport with the plate that I bought from @wise man (Silverspeed, London) of this Parish. Incidentally he went well above & beyond what was expected & I would recommend him to everyone.

Previously it was on a red double decker sightseeing bus in Norwich!
