(a) people weren't making this st up, and

Yeah, it's a 1960's quattroporte. Afraid I didn't take a photo of it though.

Right, I know I'm not 'in line' to post one, but this thread reminded me of something at Cholmondley Pageant. It was one of a few 'competitions' at a stand, along with 'How many balloons in the Mini'. This one was identify the car, and I don't have an official answer, so I'm throwing it out to the power of PH to get the job done. I've tried their website and there is no mention of it.

Yes. I was trying to place the colour and the silver pinstripe, plus I did own one briefly and I knew I recognised some of the mouldings, just couldn't place them. I'l have a tenner on that!
