Its the greatest SOTW ever, I love it - but then I would, its mine! At least it is until Sunday when the new owner picks it up......

Nice to see its had so many good comments, I'd advertised it for over 6 weeks and had virtually zero interest and i actually agreed a price lower than the £999 in the end.

Still at least it made the prestigeous title of "Shed" (shame it wasnt a week or two earlier!) wink

Cheers!!

As for the airbag light....would it not just make sense to get behind the cluster, snip the wires (or cut the tracks on the PCB) and take a feed from the ABS light? That way, its on with a turn of the key and off when your started?? Easy fix! Not sure why a car should fail its MOT if the airbag light is on, what would be the big deal that would make it un-roadworthy?
It's a great shed smile But the cheating the light isn't the best option as when you crash and the say the bag doesn't go off you will fall neatly onto the steering wheel as the seat belts are designed to pay out above a certain load wink

Having said that £1k for a XJR? Nicethumbup

I had the pleasure of a ride through central London in a bright green version when it was new and it was like the parting of the red sea in traffic and out of junctions, a wonderful thing.

The later XJ40 ones aren't quite as "Halfords" (IMO), but then I would think that as I bought one!

Best car I've ever bought bar none, including everything from a '67 Rover P6 to a modern 180bhp Audi A4 TDi Quattro. Only problem is that the bumper catches on everything and replacements are a bugger to find! rolleyes

Great car loved these.

One big issue on this one is the airbag warning light... That would be an MOT fail (probably why it's being sold frankly). To fix that problem could be mega bucks or get it MOTd before the end of May then enjoy it for a year knowing it will be a scrapped in 12 months. Darn these H&S foolish rules

Yuk. Sorry, but anyone claiming that this isn't a moneypit is very optimistic!

Sit in someone elses to go all the way to le mans? Yep, great. To own? No thanks!
Wheres your sense of adventure?

Run it for a month, worse case scenario it turns out to drink more 10w40 than petrol = sell it on to a breaker. You would only lose a few hundred. Thats a lot less risk than buying a 3 year old ex-fleet diesel.

Fantastic machine, and definitely one of the best SOTWs ever!

I love Jags, especially these X300 models - much imroved styling over the XJ40s.

Yet to own an XJR, but will love to have one at some point.

A lot of car for very little cash - probably worth more in parts alone!

Currently have a Series 3 XJ6 - truly sublime wafting carpet.

Truly iconic British legends.

Everyone should own a Jag at some point in their life - and I mean a 'proper' Jag, none of this X type or s type non-sense!

Fantastic shed!

My X308 XJR was just outside of shed teritory at £1700. Cat C, bodywork terrible (looks ok from a distance or when passing at warp speed), 67k but no history. I took a chance on it, put a new MOT on it and have run it for 6 months and about 2000 miles without fault. So far only spend is £300 on new rear tyres hehe(and a lot more on petrol) haven't even washed it since I got it but love it to bits. Just hope I have time soon to make some new pulleys and speed the supercharger up.

As for insurance try Peter Best, £260 on a 3000mile limit, I'll have to ring them soon to up it!
Fixing the airbag could be mega bucks so getting it past the MOT may be financially unviable.

Also the suggestions of snipping the wore and putting in a PCM to give the impression of a light... I'm sadly that will not work the MOT testers have to pug into the ecu so the fault will display there. They know what cars should and should not have them too so it's hard to pass cars which have been turned into track and road cars... A real problem for those Sunday racers. Solution they need a trailor to take the car to the track or reinstall working airbag and steering wheel.

It also buggers up those chaved up or Barry boy saxos without original steeringwheel.

I'm sorry but I think you are wrong there - that would mean every MOT station would have to have a comprehensive diagnostics kit to cover every potential make and model likely to be presented for an MOT.

It'll be a visual check only for light on at start and off once running (or whatever is the std process) and wire linking will work fine for an MOT

I'll agree with you there - it will be a problem if the airbag units have been removed on road/track and same could be applied to ABS units removed although up to recently as long as you removed all of the componentry sensors, modulator etc it's been OK

I don't think you'd actually get that much selling it - it's about £250/300 weighed-in, if you want to fanny around trying to find a buyer for all the bits you might make a bit more but you'll spend a whole chunk of time and effort doing that (I doubt it would work-out much above minimum wage!!)

You're right about the risk tho - this is a shed, you buy it and you drive it/bodge it until it's beyond viable bodging. The fact this one already needs some work is a shame - no idea how much the manifold swap would cost but it's the sort of job you'd rather not have to take-on before you even start...

We need a T Shirt made which just says "It's a managed retreat" and has a pic of a car with half-jammed windows, no passenger wing mirror, snapped aerial with a coat-hanger taped-on and 4 mismatched tyres smile

>>>> Slight blow from exhaust manifold when cold (not loud and doesn't effect performance - theres a pair of really good spare manifolds included too)

Very worrying. I had an XJS with the same AJ16 engine and the exhaust manifolds were a notorious weak point. Once they are fixed the car is quiter, more powerful and will get through an MOT.

The fact the seller thinks a blowing exhaust manifold does not affect the power makes me think he does not know much about cars.

In response to all you who would prefer a V8, the AJ16 six cylinder car has no Nikasil or timing chain issues and is VERY strong.

If I could afford to fuel it though, I could afford a better one. Which is why I guess it is only 1k - little more than scrap.
Errrr Im the seller, my knowledge on cars is good enough thanks - its obviously my honesty that lets me down, or more likely your lack of understanding on cars like this. The manifold blow is so minor you only really notice it with the bonnet up and your ear to it (it seals once warm and stops) Likewise theres a set of as near-new as you'll find manifolds included (not cheap or easy to come by) with no stripped or damaged threads to worry about; so whats its an easy fix.
Its as cheap as it is because I need it gone (it has now sold by the way) Its never had any welding, the scabby bits are exactly as described - no worse.

"little more than scrap" eh? You should see it compared with other jags of this age, you'd be plesantly surprised - I'm always very critial when I sell a car, the same as when I buy them. Im losing out by selling it so cheap; but personal circumstances dictate that it had to go.

Dont pass judgement until you've seen/driven it - and please, dont question my knowledge.

Whats the old saying? Opinions are like A**eholes, everybody's got one..........

Cheers!
