I did the same with my old car. Fluid change to SFR, OEM discs and BMW Perforance pads and it worked very well. Still miss mine a lot and I doubt I will ever use a better engine again.
Would just a fluid change to sfr make much difference or would I need to change pads too? Mainly for road driving but the odd track day.

Based on experience and the fact that you are primarily using it on road, first try SRF or any good racing spec DOT 4 fluid. Stainless steel lines are up to you - I'm happy with standard lines for now.

Obviously, better fluid won't increase your braking performance, but it'll help to prevent fluid boiling or turning into a gas and giving you a soft pedal. Conversely, upgrading the pads alone will eventually result in your fluid boiling as well, given that more heat is being generated by the fact that you are 1) using higher performing pads and 2) staying out on track longer.

It is safer to have pad fade than fluid boiling. Pad fade is more easily managed and totally recoverable if you stop pushing once you detect it, while once fluid boils, your brake pedal is going to be soft for many hours or days depending on the recoverability of the brake fluid.

If it's not good enough for you, then move to race pads or performance road pads.

This way you get to appreciate the difference each change makes and save money if you find no need for better pads.

Just want to say a huge thanks to E92 M3 owners Adrian, Jarrod, Tony, Marcus, Andrew and Jonathan for taking the time out to share their ownership experiences with their cars for the latest diary instalment. Thanks guys! Top work by Matt for organising too.

Cheers,

Dan

Enjoyed reading the individual write ups of the owners & as expected the DCT box dominated the group with only one with the three pedal set up.

I bet all the owners are chuffed to get their cars featured I know if I still had mine I would have really liked to be involved in something like this.

Great work Dan! smile

Wish had known this was on at the Old School Cafe, in Longcross, would have brought over my Sport Evo to join the fun.

I can't speak for the others, but I certainly was. smile

I agonised over the Manual vs DCT thing when I ordered mine, and originally went with the Manual. But after driving a DCT I was hooked, it's very subjective of course. However, I just felt it suited the car and the manic engine better, by having manic gearshifts to match.

I agree regards the gearbox too & I am a die hard manual fan but the DCT really does suit the awesome high revving engine so much, pleased you enjoyed the get together & I genuinely would have loved to do something like that too. smile

Would love to drive one, Ive driven M5's (F10, E39 and E60) but never an m3. Unfortunately at 25 im not sure Id like to take on the expenditure that comes with it.

True what they say about the engine then? Always read comments about its lack of torque but Ive never found any flat crank V8 impressive (Ferrari F430 for example). I bet the new M3/4 will be corker judging by how good the M5 is.

Beautiful and very nice cars but slightly sad to not see any more 'exciting' colours.

The M3's S65 V8 is a dual/crossplane crank design. However, the race version designated P65 uses a flat plane crank design.

Apologies smile - but for me that is also part of an M3's appeal - in normal colours it is a fairly discrete car - my girlfriend (along with probably 80% of other road users) just sees it as a BMW, rather than anything worthy of attention.

Was good to meet the other owners, and thanks Matt/Dan for the bacon roll!

cheers

Which is yours? I've got the mineral white DCT with Competition pack and love the stealthy nature of it. The new colours of the M4 are quite appealing though.

I wonder how much car colours are influenced by the way society as a whole feels. Normal colours in recession times and bright lairy ones in the good times.

I've come to the conclusion I just don't like the styling of the E92. The rear end in particular just doesn't look right.

I'll have my M3 in E90 guise please...

The engine is masterpiece, 295lb/ft of torque is plenty because you have a gearbox to go with it plus the curve is a flat as a fart with a huge area under the line.

It revs like nothing else I've ever driven and goes ballistic over the last 2k, going from the top of 3rd into 4th leaves you in no doubt that you're in a very quick car.

Oh and the throttle response is such that when I drive other cars I feel like I'm pressing thin air.
