People that drive 50 on motorways - why?

Intentionally driving at 20mph under the limit should be an offense.
Yes, because as we all know, the speed limit is the speed at which you must drive at all times, irrespective of your better judgement. plastictoast said:

I'm allowed to do 70, so I'm going to do 70 thanks. Or considerably more if I feel like it.
And I'm not rising to that bait... you can drive as fast as you like. But that's your choice. How slowly other people drive is their choice. See how it works?cpjitservices said:
I generally sit between 60 and 70, although the Galaxy was dreadful at 60 so a little under was usually bearable.
I am yet to figure out, why, if I am doing 70, Drivers come speeding past me ? OK 70 wont be accurate but still.. They go hurtling past at a great rate of knots.
How is it they don't end up with speeding fines ? Why do they not get caught exceeding the speed limit ?
It's this new thing the kids are doing called observation. HTHI am yet to figure out, why, if I am doing 70, Drivers come speeding past me ? OK 70 wont be accurate but still.. They go hurtling past at a great rate of knots.

But the speeds I choose to drive at don't force HGVs into the faster moving lanes. See how it works?
But it almost certainly forces faster moving traffic into the lanes with slower moving traffic - same net result (ie people slowing down) - you can't have it both ways....SuperchargedVR6 said:
No I'm not. I'm saying people should keep pace with the flow of traffic, not hinder it. Considerably more people want to get from A to B as quickly as possible, than those who are happy to plod along at 50. Like I say, keep the traffic moving for the good of everybody, not the minority who amble along like slugs. And as we have said in this thread repeatedly, if these people can't drive safely on motorways, or are afraid to drive on them, what the fruiting hell are they doing on them in the first place?
Completely agree with this. Every time people driving at pitiful speeds is brought up on here the same pathetic argument is dredged up to defend them "it's a limit not a target!" - No.While I understand that some people drive slower or more cautiously than others, that's perfectly fine to a degree. However once you're doing 20 MPH below the limit then you're causing a serious hindrance/obstruction to other road users.
Let us not forget that "progress" is now part of the driving test and doing any of the below can result in a fail;
Appropriate speed:
Crawls along at slow speeds on clear roads.
Makes no attempt to achieve maximum speeds for the road when safe to do so.
Reduces speed excessively when the conditions do not merit doing so.
Makes slow progress through the gears in normal driving.
IMO if you're doing one or more of the above you should be pulled over and subjected to an on the spot fine for causing an obstruction.

The kind of thread that makes you wonder what some of the posters are doing on a motorist forum.
"I will NOT travel at, or near, motorway speeds on a motorway....now, where can I sign up to tell the world of this?"
PistonFeds - Speed never matters
This is the kind of drivel that makes me despair of motoring forums, that everyone is possessed with either speed or acceleration."I will NOT travel at, or near, motorway speeds on a motorway....now, where can I sign up to tell the world of this?"

You can be a motoring enthusiast into bubble cars, 70s mopeds, etc. My mate rides a 1927 Harley. It weights a tonne and has about 15 hp I think. It would never get anywhere near 70. It takes half a mile to stop from about 40. Is he not allowed to be a PH?

I would ban anything from motorways that cannot get up to 70mph in a reasonable time and maintain at least 70mpg up hills. With an obvious exception for HGVs.
In between doing my CBT and DAS a friend and I borrowed the crappy 125's from the riding school to take them out for a day of practice. Going up the A38 towards Bristol airport we become a rolling roadblock, as the bikes just didn't have the runt to maintain 50mph up the hill. Never rode something so gutless ever again and never would.
I also wouldn't want to have too little power on a motorway. I could and have (many years ago) driven a little 1.0 litre stbox on the motorway that could take a week to 70 and slows down on hills..... never would again. Having the power to accelerate out of dangerous situations or pass quickly is almost as useful for keeping you safe as your brakes are.

I've never been convinced by this argument. It smacks to me of something people say to justify having a far more powerful vehicle than they need. Nothing wrong with having a powerful car or bike, but just say you got it because you wanted it, not because "I need to have power to get out of danger."When you're in a dangerous situation, very rarely is accelerating the answer. The only times I've ever had to accelerate out of danger is when I've done something daft to put myself in danger, like pulled out of a side road when I should have waited. And if I'd had a less powerful car in the first place, I would have waited.

I do approx 40k a year, these mongs do my fking head in. There is absolutely no need for any car to be overtaken by a HGV. If your journey is such a laid back affair that you can do 50 on the motorway then do everyone a favour and take the scenic B road route, motorways are for a purpose and that is the swift movement of large volumes of traffic between destinations, it's not somewhere for retards to play the uber Eco game.

This. I sometimes drive at 60mph if it's clear and I'm in no hurry. It's nice to just pootle along in peace and quiet.... But any slower is just ridiculous.
Try this on the M25. I can happily sit at 50 in the inside Lane and more than a few times come side by side with those driving from way faster in the other lanes. That's the joy of busy motorways... traffic jams just around the bend.
