to get into the '200mph club' at Bonneville, I believe you have to set a new record above 200, in any class - how would you go about that?

Start with a vast sum of money...

This. Using the example quoted, a VXR8 hitting 200 would be a hell of an achievement. It has the aerodynamic properties of a Jellyfish.
But a jellyfish exists underwater, where there is no air! I also doubt a jellyfish could hit 174 knots
My point exactly. Having been in VXR8's plenty of times and driven them, you feel like you're driving underwater for how dynamic they are.

DMS remap + delimit = +30-40bhp. My 911 had a DMS remap and was very quick.

An electronic remap on a naturally aspirated car that is already tuned to within an inch of its life making 40bhp?

Keep dreaming and/or selling for DMS (delete as applicable).

I am skeptical but there are videos of remapped E60 M5's outdragging standard ones, and they do seem to top 200 mph.

Not my claim, it's the claim of the person who drove the car and posted the video, his comment is quite legible.

Not quite you can adjust the power commander on the fly to get your fueling etc set for the track you're at etc where as most remaps are set.

A decent Hayabusa with the right bits on will set you back anything from 3.5-5k

Or there's the ZZR 1400
I'd go with the ZZR1400

Surprised no-ones mentioned the TVR Cerbera. Used to be occaisional reports of topping over 200 in Germany.

First time I saw 190 on the speedo at Bruntingthorpe, a rider from Performance Bikes came past as I slowed on the ZZR1400, unrestricted, he said he was flat out at 214

They're hitting 200mph according to the speedo not gps.

No way José.

I remember some magazine (Evo?) trying it once. They got to about 170mph before bits of bodywork started falling off.

This one was GPS I think.

Mine was surprisingly stable at Brunters

There used to be a GPS 203mph video on youtube back when I bought mine.
Plenty of evidence on here of 190+
Brummie pulled 202mph at Brunters, although his does have a modified LS3 in it

Yea he's using GPS but I don't think it's standard, to get an M5 to hit 224mph it takes 800bhp so I think most will have been fettled in some kind of way, of course it helps to have a nice clear Autobahn to play on rather than a still busy bit of motorway (even at 2am) to do it on. smile

Here's a G Power M5 cracking 220mph

You also need large testicular fortitude to approach the 200MPH in shall we say 'budget' racers....
Had the 911 to 150 on the Autobahn, and you need to concentrate. I'd imagine some of the above would be petrifying....
I agree...I had a 944 S2 up to 150mph on a German Autobahn...it was pretty scary even at that speed as I was appreciably faster than everything else on the road and approaching 3 times (and 100mph) faster than the trucks and caravans!
Not sure I'd want to go any faster, no matter what car, on a public road.

Most saloon racecars won't get anywhere near 200mph due to the limitations of the tracks, rather than the cars...although I suspect gearing would put a halt on speed over around 150mph ish

I did a few runs at Bruntingthorpe in my E61 M5. It had been re-mapped to remove the limiter. This re-map also raised the rev limiter by 250 rpm.

The best I managed was 182mph as measured by the timing beams, this translated to 196mph on the HUD. This was in 6th gear, there was one more gear to go.

I have no doubt that with an extra 3 or 4 miles of road, it would have hit a true 200mph.

I'd read somewhere that an M5 (E60 as mentioned) would be able to do it, but I'd always thought it needs some adjustments...not stock.

Surely someone has already posted these clips from the Fifth Gear attempt using a V8 Esprit?

Part 1
Part 2

The bloke doing 206mph in the Sierra whilst wearing a cardigan is pretty funny, meanwhile Tiff Needell can't crack 190 and he's dolled-up in race overalls and skid lid!

I think the older Japanese stuff could be worthy with some money thrown at it - the JZA80 Supra TT or the slippery FD3S RX-7 might be in with a shout - if you throw money at them of course. Out-of-the-box examples will all be well known. Some left-field stuff like a Corvette ZR1 or Viper SRT-10 Coupe? Perhaps one of those hideous Cadillacs with big enough power - though I'd have thought the aerodynamics wouldn't allow it.

This would be my choice, I had a Hot Wheels model and subsequently a scalextric car of a GTS when I was a child. Have you seen how mad these things are with a couple of turbos bolted on?!!

Cadillac CTS-V does 200mph standard.
