To play devils advocate, I see several cars on my drive home in the dark with only their DRLs on, rather than the headlights.

Whether on a bike or in a car, you can't educate the stupid.
The point about cyclists without lights is not that they can’t see, it’s that they can’t be seen. You can see people with their DRLs on - and presumably they can see or they would have noticed they don’t have their headlights on (visibility of non-moving objects can be OK without lights in a well lit urban area).

The annoying thing about some cars with DRLs, especially with AUTO lights, is that they don’t illuminate the rear lights, so when headlights aren’t switched on in the dark or in poor visibility, they aren’t visible from behind. You can see and your dash is lit up, so unless you notice the lack of the green headlight LED (and many don’t), they don’t get turned on. The garage always turns off AUTO lights when my car sets taken in and I don’t always immediately notice.

Many inner city cyclists don't want lights. They don't want to be seen riding around. They don't want to draw attention to their nocturnal pharma activities. A cycle gives quick access to their stash, somewhere to store their stash and reasonably quick transport to meet their customers. If they get caught with it on their bike they would claim the substance was already there, claim they stole the bike and rather take the rap for theft.

Go to any restaurant/nightlife area in Cities and these dark cyclist are just a normal hazard.

Surprise, surprise the usual suspects are post failing attempts and sarcasm and denying it happens on any significant level while metaphorically patting each other on the back as ever. What a pity, given they're so proud of the fact they cycle, that they don't take what so many others, including some other cyclists, see as a problem seriously, but the then it's these sort of uncaring selfish attitudes from so many that leads us to the situation we see today and not just as far as cycling in the dark with no lights goes either.
No , I don’t think anyone is genuinely surprised by them anymore.

The usual militant suspects have been applying a skewed logic for so long, thay you start to expect them to automatically blame everyone else and hence, ignore everything they write as both biased and irrelevant.

As for the original question, before the militants decided they didn’t like it.

Fine them - on a means based approach.
Give them points as well, if they also have a licence, as those people should know better.
Use the money from the fines taken to buy lights and batteries for those that genuinely cannot afford them.
Ignore the apologists.

I think it's the double standards that annoy me the most, this site is full of people who want break motoring laws such as to speed with impunity, and, judging from a recent thread, jump lights with impunity etc etc. But do some thing illegal on a push bike and you are a lycra cacd fkwit, or drug dealer it would seem.

It cuts both ways though as a lot of the cyclists on here argue that running through red lights is generally ok as very few accidents ever occur. Personally I think a cyclist running through a red and not obstructing anyone by doing so is fine, but not so much when they cause other vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists to take avoiding action.

I also believe that on dry motorways with good visibility and light traffic 70mph is a sillly low limit whereas in the dark on a wet motorway with heavy traffic it is probably too high.

It’s a question of judgement I guess, but I doubt that riding around in the dark dressed in black with no lights would come up as acceptable to many... yet you see plenty of them... it’s genuinely stupid frankly.

Fair enough, but I really don't generalise about all cyclists, I think it might feel like that as I do tend to give as good as I get when things kick off in here, but my complaint is with those that behave like idiots just as it is with drivers in the same boat. I think, as an occasional cyclist myself, I am just genuinely astounded at how little self preservation some of them seem to exhibit. My biggest complaint on the lights front is that I really couldn't imagine how I'd feel if I hit one... I know others on here have said it wouldn't bother them if they were in the right, but it would me.... a lot. I was trying to work it out the other day, but I reckon I've driven close to 1.5 million miles in my life and I've been very lucky to only have had one accident and that was at the hands of a drunk driver... I've never hit a pedestrian or a cyclist .... I really don't want to start now.

So if you don’t have a problem with cyclists why do you create so many daft threads about them? As for not generalising, shall I pull up a few of your quotes....

It’s staggering how some people write things and conveniently forget. Even if you have deleted some of the more inflammatory remarks they’ll likely still be quoted smile

Do what you like, but we both know you won’t be contextual and will cherry pick to support your agenda. By the way you do realise you’re coming across as a bit weird and obsessive don’t you?

PS I have a problem with idiot cyclists as I have said several times in this thread alone.... context my little weird Internet friend... context!

Must be reading different threads, I'm not seeing any apologising, just boredom at yet another cycling whinge thread started by the op. Its almost 1 per week for fks sake. Seriously think he needs help, or just to get a life, it's a borderline obsession and more than a little pathetic.

Approximately 20% of the population are imbeciles or self centered tts, lots of them can be found behaving like utter bell ends behind the wheel of a car, some of them ride bikes. Get over it.

1 a week???? LOL. I’ll get a life when you learn to tell the truth!

Anyway at least you’ve revealed yourself as happy to have people riding around with no lights on I guess.

Maybe a bit of an exaggeration, but certainly seems that way at times.

At least you're admitting you don't have a life, acknowledging you have a problem is the first step to recovery.

Anyway as usual the cycling bods on here have dragged this off topic and made it personal so perhaps we could get back to the topic in hand. If a few of you want to start a separate ‘cb1865 is s ****’ thread then please do!

Who's he? Sounds like you've got multiple personalities at work in that head of yours.

This thread is the paradigm of poor presentation of a good point. Resulting in the merit of the good point being entirely lost.

Cb1965 I read these threads and really think you need to seek some kind of help. Every couple of weeks you're either starting an anti cycling thread or spreading hate on someone else's. If you have a family and they have to put up with this kind of behavior from you then they must be long suffering. Either that or they're just like you. Ironically you might find riding a bike or some other form of exercise might sort your head out and clear away the anger.
Either way just give it a rest

I do ride a bike and sorry if you don’t agree that riding around in the dark with no lights is stupid and dangerous, but that is up to you as you are entitled to opine however you like as am I.

Are you really saying that if I can't see them it's my fault and you can judge my driving from a post on the Internet? I think probably not and suspect you're only trying to get a rise as usual, but just in case you are that daft you might want to realise that seeing a cyclist with no lights/hi-vis in a well lit dry night time street might be easy whereas seeing them on a dark wet back road might be less so. Hope that helps!

PS not my step daughter, the assumptions on here are quite amusing.
I'm basing your standard of driving on numerous posts on here. I'm not saying I'm right, just that's how you come across to me. HTH.

PS: My mistake, your partner's daughter. I'd had a few ales last night....

No worries, as said everyone is entitled to an opinion, however obscurely it may be formed.
