Don’t get why most EVs have to look hideous but agreed the iX is in a faeces category all of its own.It amazes me that people flock to these brands, mumbling in a quiet British way about design, without realising BMW don't even care enough about them to design a Western looking car for them

Audi SQ5.
It's an SUV, no it's not it's a sporting SUV.
That doesn't handle well, doesn't do comfort well unless you spec it with a £7k upgrade to model with air suspension, isn't that quick, doesn't make a nice noise ( as it's diesel) and costs a fortune. It's bloody enormous but not much space in rear due to sloping roof. And is not sporty to drive.
It's a marketing person's wet dream of a car.
It's vehicles like this that give ICE cars a bad name.

I think that if you trying to appraise the iX using historical design rules that evolved over 100 years of ICE cars, then it might fall short.
EVs steer the design in ways that ICE cars don't.
The high waistline from the underfloor battery, the need for every last bit of aero efficiency to be found, the need to close off cooling apertures we are traditionally used to seeing, tapering roofline, etc.
These things are forcing ALL manufacturers to design cars that we are unaccustomed to.
I don't think you can show me a full size EV SUV that is an example of good design using your traditional yardsticks. Audi and Mercs are either bland, unadventurous or amorphous blobs. The I-pace is inoffensive but its starting to look quite dated to me.
Personally I find the BMW approach just a bit more interesting and I do think it will stand the test of time better than most.
Teslas looks like an appliance.
An actually that's just what an EV SUV is. The performance of the design in terms of efficiency, materials consumption and cost are ultimately now more important than how it looks.
The design as you see it will sell in the quantities that BMW have targeted, to buyers who are perfectly happy with the way it looks, you can be pretty sure of that.
They are just not posting on PistonHeads, generally.
My point is that this car looks the way it does for good business reasons, and I suggest that subconsciously some people are uncomfortable that their tastes are no longer the most important tastes out there, as far as new car buyers go.
All you can really do about it is write some strongly-worded internet posts, which is what we are seeing here.
EV doesn’t necessarily mean a high waistline. The Porsche Taycan and it’s Audi sister have very low waistlines and the Tesla Model 3 & S have normal height waistlines.EVs steer the design in ways that ICE cars don't.

There’s an awful lot of extremely vulgar, no-class stuff out there these days.
Generally speaking (and yes it’s a stereotype) if it’s the sort of thing a lottery winner, footballer or Katie Price would drive then that would seal it for me - I’m thinking bling SUVs, Rollers or unusable hypercars. (The hypercars are all very well but I wouldn’t want to be seen in one).

The way it looks is deliberate. It is not a good design, by any standards - the designers know that, the management knows that, that’s their gamble. It will sell in spite of that, not because of it - that means that most people don’t care enough, not that it’s some revolutionary new aesthetic language that only applies to EVs. Of the current electric designs, I’d say the I-Pace is the most successful by some margin - if for no other reason than its design is informed by its underpinnings (rather than copying the proportions of something with an engine in the front) without looking like a blobby toy car (as the EQS/EQE do).

Cor! That looks brilliant. It’s hardly tasteless, just Uber-futuristic. I think - to me at any rate - “tasteless” in cars has a sort of crossover with vulgar, it’s a blingy statement of wealth. An Aygo X is hardly that.
Anyway - it looks awesome and I want one. How have Toyota come up with that and BMW cocked it up so badly?
Surely the Mansory Coastline is right up there. If you have a big enough supply of sickbags you can watch Shmee dribbling over it.

I wouldn’t consider this to be a good design.
It’s only been around a couple of years, but looks like a 1990s concept car.
It isn’t tasteless though so a bit off topic.

Whilst acknowledging you are entitled to your opinion the fact you are using the i pace as a yardstick to measure EVs by is…. Interesting.

as we know looks are subjective. I think that's quite a handsome car, but then again I like 90s concept cars. Some of the modern BMW however, are horrific (IMO) and definitely tick the vulgar box, as many on here agree.I wouldn’t consider this to be a good design.
