I don't really understand what Toyota have done with the UK models. They've given it a 4 pot commercial diesel which works well for the customers who want a working vehicle, but then they've thrown the entire "soccer-mom" luxury spec at it, 7 seats and all, and ended up with an £80k price neither of which "working" drivers want, and a 4 pot diesel is quite a long way from a luxury motor.

£80k gets you a well specced D350 HSE Defender with a smooth straight six. Its hard to look passed that comparing the two.

Sure, but the old tech engine is a stop gap until they need to go full EV. They’re not going to invest in a brand new diesel unit for half a generations use

Toyota must have a greater range of engines available than any other car company. The 4 pot is fine if it was £65k without the luxury spec. I just don’t understand why they’ve thrown the whole options list at the launch models when it has such a modest power plant.

Must be far more bulletproof than a Range, with the looks of a Tonka truck! Love it.

I'm registered with three dealers and not heard a peep yet.

My dealer emailed me on Tuesday to advise they have been allocated…. one vehicle and that if I was definitely interested they would check next steps. I had to chase them to actually continue the conversation and it’s already spoken for now. I plan to wait for the mild hybrid next year if the dealers are actually capable of selling one…

The way Toyota are handling supply of this, GR Yaris and GR86 in combination with the dealer sales skills (better to say engagement with serious potential customers) is simply terrible.

Finally got a call from one of the dealers I had spoken with, they were allocated one, yes one car for 2024, and unsurprisingly it has already sold.

Both the 3.3 diesel V6 and the 3.4 petrol are relatively new (late-2010s), competitively powerful/clean and offered in the J300.

So, yes, it's a bit odd. Maybe they expect buyers to be suburban mums who think "cylinder count" refers to the number of cup holders.

Same news from our dealer.

He did suggest that they were more hopeful of more sensible specs and proper supply further down the line and that launch editions were always going to be high spec and in short supply.

Not sure I can wait that long to replace the current Hilux though - going to test drive a Grenadier shortly but still tempted by the best 200 series I can find.

The Grenadier was a hard 'no' from the kids. The legroom, in the UW and SW is limited even for younger children and compared to the LC very cramped.

That's interesting, I don't regularly carry passengers in the back but when I do it's on fairly lengthy journeys. I did read something about there being two positions for the rear seat to prioritise load space vs rear legroom. Spec dependant but the bolt holes are there in all Grenadiers.

Thanks for the feedback though, will definitely have a seat in the back! Slightly wary about reliability after years of completely fault free Toyota ownership but it does have a 5 year warranty and the nearest service centre is a proper old school independent about 20m drive away.

The SW has 7cm (IIRC) more legroom than the UW, though it is very upright, Defender-esque (unsurprisingly) and with none of the recline/heating/comfort of the LC.

That said, if I wasn't regularly doing longer trips with the children, I'd be back in a Hilux, rather than a Grenadier.

Really??? Or the cynic in me thinks they know that holding onto how many they have = resale over list price...

Suzuki dealers showed the way.

despite the fact the Toyota will be by far the better ownership prospect
Why? Everyone I know I with a Defender loves it, and they are clearly better to drive and nicer to be in.
Because for me ownership includes out of warranty.

I'd much, much rather be at the behest of a Toyota dealer than a LR one.
And that is absolutely the point with the core target buyer of the LC, very different from a JLR SUV buyer.

And, as for out of warranty, remember that Toyota annd Lexus offer a 10-year warranty if you get it serviced within the dealer network.
