7 pages? Guys, get out more.
It isn't an M3 badge, it doesn't say M3. It says M. And the car is a 330i M Sport. Funny that.
Open the drivers door and there will be another badge exactly the same on the sill that BMW themselves put there.
Whats the problem? He's not passing it off as an M3.

I think we're going round in circles here....
Other than that, interesting to hear you had a C36 - great cars by all accounts. I enjoyed my 'C' but it was a humble diesel, not an AMG

BMW M is the name of the division, M3's, M5's are the specific models they make.
Yes, that's what I wrote.pgilc1 said:
M Sports use M designed/approved parts, and interestingly, the 'M' logo by itself is on the kick plates, steering wheel, gear knob, alloy wheels, so the M does not designate M3 or M5, it designates M Division.
No, the M Sport is a sport model with a st load of M badges, as said before it's blatant brand manipulation of the M division and the M car's reputation. Nothing (of significance) is interchangeable with the M cars and they're off the shelf sport parts. Point to ponder - why is there an X3 M sport but they've only just done an X5 M sport for the new model? BTW I know where the badges arepgilc1 said:
The suspension is different, its lower with firmer, heavier duty shocks. You can specify the sport suspension on the SE.
Yes, the sport suspension option is identical to the M sport models and available on pretty much everything, unlike the M suspension which is only fitted to the M cars. Oh and to be really anal, the anti roll bars are thicker and the bump stops are different too;)pgilc1 said:
For the record you cannot delete sport suspension on even a humble 318d M Sport - try it on car configurator on their website.
You can on the X3, look at the configurator for the X3, not the 3 series. In fact here's a second hand one from a dealer... http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/BMW+...Other than that, interesting to hear you had a C36 - great cars by all accounts. Is that why cars like the M535i and 325i Sport predated the 'proper' M cars? The M3/M5/M6 are halo models. They probably don't even make much money out of selling them. They exist to boost the fortunes of the rest of the range. Bob the salesrep hasn't got a cat in hells chance of having an M3. He'd really like one but he doesnt sell enough carpets. But hang on, whats this? He CAN have a 320d M Sport instead. So he orders one instead of an Audi A4. Thats how marketing works.
I did the same thing. I really want an E39 M5. But I can't afford one. But I can afford a 530i Sport, so I bought one. I really don't mind people thinking I only bought it becuase I couldnt afford an M5 becuase guess what - it's true. The existence of the Sport model ensured BMW got my business.
The 'brand manipulation' is what keeps the proper M cars alive.

Hence, an 'M' badge refers to M Division, not an M car. QEDpgilc1 said:

Yes, that's what I wrote.Other than that, yes, probably some exploitation of the M brand going on there. For instance my 535d is a 535d Sport, however those built from Oct 05 onwards have a chrome grill and are 535d M Sports.
But then Mercedes exploit the AMG brand, and Audi theirs. I guess its the halo effect. Get the max value possible from your sporty range topper, by linking lesser cars to that.

To be fair I don't hold quite the same level of contempt for the car which kickstarted this whole debate. This, on the other hand...
