Maybe its time for limited runs of " Sport" cars with a real minimalistic approach. Don't sell them as high spec, sell them as cheap foot on the ladder cars. Lower power na, smaller wheels, no leather, air con, stereo, airbags. GRP bonnet, boot lid, no carbon to be seen, keep that to the m///. Back in the day didn't they do similar with the e30 318is?
Manufacturers would not allow such a car these days. It is not in their interests to sell a car that is not only lighter than other cars in the range, but also cheaper. Hence why modern lighter special editions (911 GT3RS, M3CSL) are actually at a premium to other cars in the range.

I like the look of it. Sounds like it's going to be a winner, although it is a shame about the normally aspirated engines going. As stated it's a sign of the times!

I do find it amusing however when the article claims 'by introducing younger (and less financially endowed) buyers to the brand' that £40+K before extras is within reach of the less financially endowed. Erm I think if you can afford a new one your going to be pretty well endowed in the wallet department.
Hahahahah, just what I was thinking. 40K and less financially endowed. Great headline that,

I totally agree with you which is why I don't think I will be considering a 1 M. I can get all the fun of a 1M and more power for about 3K in mods.

As for Porsche managing the weight issue. If you compare my 1er to its rival the Caymen
I'm perplexed as to why anyone would consider any 1 Series could be a 'rival' to a Caymen (or any other two seater 'sports' type car for that matter).... ?????

It's like going back to the early 1970's and saying a Ford Escort was a rival to a Lotus Elan for goodness sake.....
I agree with you too. I think its compared based on price and performance excluding other factors.

what would you consider a 1 coupe rival? I ask as I can't think of many.

I agree as well, I guess I was hoping for this. I think the 1 coupe is the best looking BMW that you can buy new and would have loved one as described, something long the lines of:

300bhp RWD small 4 seat coupe.

Nope, I can't think of any either, probably why its pitted against the Caymen.

On the Aussy top gear they put the 135 up against the Misti Evo 10 and Focus RS I believe. It has also been compared against the 370Z based on price and performance once again.

this is why I was thinking Cayman as I can't think of any either, I think for this car the rear seats may well be incidental

I agree, I had not seen a new BMW I've really liked the look of since the early '90s, then I saw a 1 Coupe at Silverstone GP last year and thought it had the potential to get back to the good old days so its all a bit of a disapointment.

This discussion has been done heavily on 1addicts.com.

The initial reports of the 1M were a smaller 4 pot 2.5l single turbo setup that was tuned to a little over 300bhp coupled with a lightweigh body, mech LSD with very few comforts. That would have been a fun car but I wouldn't have bought one of those either as I want something that is quick and comfortable for a daily drive. The 1M to be released has indeed developed into a beefed up 135 using the same engine which could possibly just be utilising the power upgrade from the BMW Performance catalogue.

So has anyone put a deposit down for one, and do they intend to actually buy it now they've seen the specs?

this would have been so much better, shame the couldn't/wouldn't put the S54 out of the E46 in there...

I don't think it's competition for the Cayman or the 370z, both of which only have 2 seats

The TT is the only obvious competition for the 1 coupe

A bit too saloon car-like in appearance for my eyes, as are many BMW 'coupes'. Prefer a sleeker more slopy back end (fnarr fnarr).

Doesn't look like progress to me. I bet the inevitable remaps make it really laggy too.
This is incorrect sorry, I have been out in a remapped 135 pushing 400bhp and it actually felt smoother than mine in standard form. The 1 M is getting the same engine.

In fact, purchasing a 1M/135 and then moddifying it is where they start to make more sense if you are concerned about bang for buck.

You couldn't squeeze an additional 100bhp out of the V8 in the M3 for £500 quid thats for sure. I reckon a supercharger kit would cost a pretty penny to purchase and install.

I suppose different people have different standards when it comes to things like throttle and engine responsiveness.

I found the remap reintroduced a significant amount of lag and what i would describe as a "rubber band throttle" which BMW had probably spent a lot of time and effort minimising.

Yes the car is very powerful and very fast, but in stock form the power delivery is disappointing at the top end, and the remap just makes it faster and laggier.
