Only thing stopping me getting one of these sometime is the worry I won't get away with really taking the piss on the company fuelcard I may consult HR at some point
It's not that bad on the motorway, really. In our banger rally 500SEL we got 22mpg travelling from Monaco to Calais and we averaged 88mph, including stops...Gruber said:

Thats on a 58 mile each way commute, 90% motorway. The morning run is early so reasonably light traffic but I just use that as an excuse to open her up more
I think the company is fairly lenient but I've heard about an unwritten rule about not running a 5 litre V8 2-seater, so its almost a case of perception over reality. I can well believe there is not that much difference on a run unless you are wringing its neck constantly. I'm already playing the system a bit by using a pre-2001 car to duck under the emissions loading on the so called new 'Green' Car scheme

Surely the best value shed yet? That's a hell of a lot of car for £750...
Too bloody right! I've never really wanted any Mercedes all that much, but this one looks like an amazing buy! You have to ask why it hasn't sold yet.... something you only notice when you see it in person, perhaps?John D. said:

You'll only duck it for so long. Osbourne will see too that. I have a 5L V8 4 seater, (2 door), right now. Trying to keep your foot off the gas is difficult. I reckon 'normal' driving will see your combined figure at around 18mpg.Think I'm getting around 26mpg from my 300CE-24, although that may be a tad on the optimistic side. What a coincidence - watched the film 'A Prophet' yesterday and saw this coupe Merc in the closing scene.
Have to admit that the 20 year old car looked intimidatingly menacing driven at slow speed, even in the company of a modern day Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne.
Great car, average film.

Guys
I have a W124 E220 which due to unforseen circumstances I can no longer afford to run.
It's 93K with 146k miles. Book stamped to verify mileage.
Autobox with Sport/Economy switch.
Cruise control.
Electric windows and sunroof.
Clarion CD player.
Cloth seats - not leather.
No air con.
It's cracking car and I love it but its going to have to make way for something that is cheaper to run.
I live in Cheltenham so if anyone nearby fancies a look. I would take a grand for it which seems nothing for what it is.
PM if anyone is interested please.
Cheers all.

Superb shed!
I bought one of these with 183k on the clock in 'Oct 10, met blue coupe with full fat cream leather. 4 months in I am absolutely loving it. Highly recommend a W124 chassis Merc, it is therapeutic driving them, ultimate waftage!!! Sublime ride.
The coupes are ludicrously cheap.
Now tempted to fiddle with it though, slam it and put some deep dish rims on?

What a top SOTW!
I was ill over the last few days, so not had the chance to put a post up.
But, well done to whoever bought this.
One of the best-built Mercedes ever, constructed in a time when Mercedes over-engineered their cars.
I would have actually snapped this up myself had I seen it on time!
Timeless elegance, this car will look good in 20 years! And still be running strong (providing it;s been well-maintained).
Well done SOTW - has t obe the best shed in a long time!

Had two of these - brilliant cars.
Watch out for the five speed auto though - when they go wrong, virtually nobody will touch them.
As has been said, ignition looms and ECUs are the other bugbears on the post CE era models.
They are not immune to rust either.
I'd still have another in a heartbeat though.

I went for a z4m roadster and love it, a much more sorted sports car than the z3mr but lately I've found myself hankering for the z3mc...read into that what you will. For me it's purely a looks/practicality thing as it can only be a backwards step mechanically against the more modern z4mr and I suspect the lack of a 6 speed box will be a pain on mway runs.

I got away with the first 4.3 V8. Then the second. Just upgraded to a 5.0. Go on, you know you should......Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
