Can you explain more about the setup. Could do with it for when the mother in law turns up unannounced.

Any sharks with laser beams attached to their heads?

In all seriousness majority of installs go on multi story builds with basements some pads you wouldn’t no if someone broke in lived there for a month then left. So shutting of lower level is increasingly common.

Had one system were owner had large annexe in the garden . His step son was living in it but he left the house unlocked at the rear so he could pop in if needed (14yr old) Very nice area we Updated system for them. While backing up files found images of a bloke fence hoping interesting watched on . He walks into his house via back door made a sandwich ate it in the conservatory then left all caught on the exterior Cctv through glass he was there for 45 mins 12 visits over 3months no joke .. turns out he was in the local mental health units care scary !!!

If you don't mind saying, what did you do?
Don't mind at all. I thought it was one of the kids knocking something over in the kitchen. My Wife went to the kitchen to see what it was and shrieked. It took about 20 seconds from them smashing the door in to the car being driven away.

Fortunately neither she nor our young kids saw them in action.

So you stayed down stairs?
Did they not do anything apart from grab the keys?

With kids in the house, I just try to work out the most efficient way of security for them if it did happen.

It was like this;

I arrived at home in the M3 at 7pm and parked in the private drive at the back of our house. Wife and I fed kids (2 and 5) in the kitchen, also at the back of the house. It was 7.15pm and dark and the kitchen blind was open.

We then left the kitchen to get the kids ready for bed. I took the 2 year old to the lounge at the front of the house to out on nappy for bed and 5 year old was in the play room between lounge and kitchen. Wife hasld gone upstairs to sort bed.

5 mins after leaving kitchen, I'm changing nappy and there's a loud crash. I think it's something in kitchen and wife comes downstairs and into kitchen.

Keys by this time are already gone from kitchen table and car is being manoeuvred out of drive.

Crazy that they're so brazen.
Good that the kids are young enough to not know what is going on.

I had some little scrotes try and get into my house last week at 2:34am. My Ring doorbell went off and he ran away. I chased them but soon realised they were both on bikes and couldn't keep up.

Made me very security conscious.

My 5 year old boy was quite excited to begin with, especially when the Police turned up. Lots of adrenaline. It was the next few nights he suddenly got really scared of the 'robbers' and needed lots of comforting. 2 year old just keeps mentioning 'roshers'.

I have a 5 year old and a 1 year old.

All I care about is their safety especially in their own home.
I've probably gone way over the top in terms of security and 'home alone' style protection but sadly we seem to live in an area with no police and lots of quite nice houses so perfect for thefts.

I allso have concealed roller shutters to my bifold doors an french doors total 4 at 22 gauge.
We have a lot of glass across rear of our property. They are in a cavity wall thickness extension which leaves ample room for interior shutters. Could you recommend a brand for shutters? I was starting to look into them (also preparing for the purge!) but the models spotted looked a bit flimsy so far with limited googling...

Familiar scenario, I work away a lot and don't wish to leave the young family vulnerable. Had solid wood interior doors fitted with deadbolts and locks to isolate the ground floor from upstairs. It's a real ball ache opening/closing them morn/night but should be enough to deter anyone from hanging around more than 5 mins with alarm on.

Next stop will be replacing the old windows with something more resistant. Haven't finished wasting my life researching that yet...

Note: We bought the house knowing they had a break in using snapping of lock technique the year earlier.

My set up

I have Cctv , alarms , motion tracking Ptz ,with number plate recognition . Line crossing set at all boundary’s sounds extreme but it works to a degree. Failing that

I allso have concealed roller shutters to my bifold doors an french doors total 4 at 22 gauge. Allso to the garage all windows are 6 Minuite vandal proof. ( my opinion all windows should be this as standard now a days )

Have you looked at the security film you can just stick over old glass - a bit like PPF for windows!! Seems to work quite well.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZy4DJHM_fs

If you applied this to every downstairs window it would keep people out or at least delay them but I'm not sure what would happen in the event of a fire if you needed a quick escape.

That 3M film looks interesting.

The shutter thing I was thinking is more of a deterrent from bothering (moving the problem on) as the neighbours are pretty easy pickings in comparison.

The fire hazard thing is worth thinking about..

Prefer to be proactive regarding security as it’s what we do rather than reactive usually find its to late thenbiglaugh

I’m into my M cars usually find all maintenance is proactive if it’s reactive it’s usually dead !

Roller systems are linked to alarms meaning if smoke alarm is trigger will allow the shutter to be opened however usually run battery backup any way . failing that if you have security windows you should have key to open if you need to escape thru one an also a fire escape window .

Velux actually make an automated roof window that opens during a fire to release smoke. irked any one see problem with that ?? Had to install 2 on spec sheet at nursing home once. Basically creates a chimney affect making the fire much worse !!!

Bradford S3 robbery caught on cam.

Owner said she leaves keys on the stair's every night for this very reason, so they don;t come upstairs!
With it being the Daily Mail, I'm surprised they didn't find a way of making the victim sound responsible given her foreign-sounding surname.

Not really pal I work away a lot have a pregnant wife at home an enjoy my motoring . Excuse me if I deem it a worth while venture to insure there safety. I do believe you should be capable of defending yourself but I’m not advocating a bait car or leaving my doors open for that matter ever .

It's not about you, however powerfully built you are. The point is, if they want the keys they will likely threaten your family to get them if they can't find them.

I'm 6'7". I'd still leave the keys were a determined thief would find them rather than risk my (hypothetical) family.

No house value mentioned either. Double fail.

What's tragic is that she was already sufficiently aware and concerned about thefts to leave keys visible. You cannot really criticise this technique for avoiding interface with these criminal scum.
