Petrol prices- when does the madness end?

So the government were/are desperate to get everyone back to the office. Unfortunately, given the high price of fuel currently I'm WFH more than ever, so it's back fired slightly!
My partner is taking my Golf GTE to work which she can charge at the hospital FOC so I'm relatively protected by the rise in costs.
Agreed. I just don't understand the desperation for encouraging unnecessary commuting which clearly goes against the 'green' agenda. They say it's to help the economy but wherever I've worked most bring packed lunches anyway. My partner is taking my Golf GTE to work which she can charge at the hospital FOC so I'm relatively protected by the rise in costs.

Seams the madness will not end any time soon.
Just had to fill up the PHEV (thankfully not something I do often) and the price at our local Sainsbury's (usually one of cheapest in the area) had jumped 3p overnight to £1.72.9
Just paid £1.93 at the local Shell, think it's time to swap for a scooter...Just had to fill up the PHEV (thankfully not something I do often) and the price at our local Sainsbury's (usually one of cheapest in the area) had jumped 3p overnight to £1.72.9
The problem with EV’s is that they require rare Earth minerals in large quantities that have to be mined, often from unsavoury and unstable parts of the world and the electricity to run them has to come from existing sources which in some countries means not just oil and gas but very dirty coal
Free charging is not going to last and as the above poster states how lucky he is that his wife can charge for free at the hospital she works at .. well that electricity isn’t free .. it’s actually being paid for by the taxpayer and the question must be asked is it really right that the taxpayer is funding his fuel ?
Certainly once everyone has one Tesco aren’t going to be paying for them all to charge for free
Neither is them being free to use without being taxed going to last
I’m all for EV’s in urban areas and for short commutes but they should be part of a portfolio of options, not the only one. A few years back the Gov thought diesel was the nirvana and I do wonder whether we will transition through these big battery EV’s to something more usable and efficient
Absolutely whilst they are excellent for some applications they aren’t suitable for everyone or every need

Reading the other day some EV bus’s are being scrapped, not because they are old but the cost to replace the batteries is prohibitive.
Like many hydrogen fuel cell buses, that sounds like a pilot scheme to test viability of EV buses in real world conditions. Either that or somebody got their costings seriously wrong and needs shooting...Jawls said:
I think it’s far too early to say that at this stage.
It’s already happening and will only get worse as the EV switchover deadline approaches. The government will milk as much as they can from ICE and it will get increasingly prohibitive to drive into towns and cities. NDA said:
I thought many (including Tesla) have been switching to Lithium and Iron - neither are rare earth minerals.
Funny thing about rare earths, they aren’t very rare. delta0 said:

The rare earths aren't Lithium (which isn't rare) but the other elements used in battery terminals but also more importantly in the electric Motors used to drive the wheels. These use a whole heap of rare earth elements and is where the whole electric thing falls flat on it's face......
People look for faults in things to justify their own beliefs. Electric is here to stay and is going to replace ICE completely in personal car use at least. Norton850 said:
While my Phev only does approx 40 mile on electric only it is getting me to work where i can charge up for free ready for the journey home and it has prompted me to buy the wife a small Ev as she can also charge her car for free from work.
Still have to visit the pumps for the old Alfa and bikes but at least the commuting is covered and as my fuel bill used to be £65 per week before Covid i would now be paying over £80 now.
£1.79 u/l and £1.84 diesel in my part of Kent...
I was looking at leasing a Merc CLA250e shooting brake late last year, but lead times were mental and the cost per month was bonkers (I used to “play” the leasing game, as per the leasing thread), so I bought a used SL instead. The Merc plug in hybrid does 40 miles on a charge - that means that I would almost never be putting fuel in - it’s rare that I drive 40 miles a day, and even if Oli was back in the office it would halve my fuel cost.
I know its over £2 at some of the motorway/main road rip off joints but can't be long until its £2 in your 'normal' supermarkets can it?
I keep thinking 'it's must've peaked now' but then it creeps up another few pence.
Unbelievable to be honest. Don't see a short term fix either sadly.
