RE: SOTW: Peugeot 205 GTi 1.6
Discussion
Great SOTW, love 205s and 309GTis - especially the Goodwood 309 Special Edition, how many are left now!
Although I am a Ford man (I have a standard XR3i) I do appreciate a good Peugeot and to me the '05 and '06 models were the golden era of Peugeots. For me, like XR2s, they have to be in red!
At Castle Combe some of the quickest things on track are 205s, they seem to stick to the track like glue!

Dont know why, I just never really liked these that much. As a kid seeing them looked nice. But as an adult, my tastes differ and when I drove it, it didnt seem to live up to the hype. Seems over rated, even compared to other vehicles in its class at the time. I guess Im in the minority though.
Brilliant cars, had three of them all 1.9
Two miami blue and one grey.
Just going to the shops and back was fun (devil on shoulder every time).
Did 790 miles in one day on the way to Switzerland and it never missed a beat.
G636 RWD,H822 WYV where are you hiding,i know you're still out there

Because it had the same cd factor as St Pauls, there were some things the 205 GTI could not do. Banging along a very quiet dual carriageway section of the A34 in rural Oxfordshire one sunny Sunday afternoon, I spied a gaggle of bikes catching me fairly quickly. "I wonder how fast they're going," I said to myself. I speeded up and speeded up and by the time the lead bike had drawn level with me I was doing 120. That was it. I couldn't wring any more out of it. The lead biker looked at me, swivelled round in his seat to make elaborate signals to his mates behind - just to recap, he's doing 120, riding one-handed, facing the wrong way - faced front again, gave me a withering look, changed down and all of them accelerated away into the distance.
I slowed down again.
But, er, up to 120 it was blisteringly quick.

ISTR Autocar maxed the 1.6 variant at 122 and the 1.9 at 123I slowed down again.

I thought Peugeot saved that colour combo for the various Roland Garros editions? Oh, & the 309 GTi Goodwood edition.![nerd](/inc/images/nerd.gif)
Another child of the 80's and ex 205 GTi owner here.
I bought a 1600cc black Phase 1.5 when I left uni.... loved it, though it had a habit of popping out of third gear and it truth it was a little tired.
Fast forward to 2005 and a colleage was selling a 1600cc red phase 1.5.... was just as good as I remembered it for a road car.
Unfortunately by that stage I was road rallying and our steed of choice was a 1900cc Phase 1 car, we rolled it on a country lane in darkest Devon on the Nightmare Rally and ended up reshelling most of the bits into a 1900cc phase 2 that the guy still owns now....
The most sideways I have ever been in a car without crashing still remains that 1st road rally 205 when the front right caliper siezed... I've no clue how the driver kept it on the road, I'd have rolled it into a tiny ball...
There's a place in my garage for a Miami Blue, non-sunroof with an Mi-16 conversion...

Ive only owned 10 of these 3 1.6 gtis, 5 1.9 gtis, an MI16 205 and my current 205 turbo, all great,I think every single one had to have a head gasket at some point in there life but other than that really reliable, gearboxes are clonky but take a serious amount of abuse, doesn't matter how clean a 1.6 is they never seem to be worth as much as a 1.9.. My advice get a 1.9 because if you don't, you will always wonder what the 1.9 is like... Great cars. wouldn't drive it everyday tho x
another top shed I would buy if single and without kids (and younger again!)
I know build quality wasn't always 100% but they were one of the cars to beat in the day (I had an XR3i and could never keep up with the 205gti's), I worked for Pug in the very early 90's and part of my job was to re-fix anything that had fallen off between the factory and our dealership (it was nearly a full time job!)

Good Shed! would not buy one now though. Had a 1.6 in red, they were ok but things have moved on... It was tinny, it was not fast, it was fun, it was horrible on long drives.
Might be fun on a track though but I can imagine that plenty other cars are too. and as for appreciating, I'd rather find something else that would appreciate a bit more for the garage space!
Great car for the time though and really good fun.
