Of course the money he has put in is at risk. The point is that even without the repayments of finance principal being made he can afford the car to lose up to 40k while still being able to sell up, clear the finance and walk away - and putting yourself in the situation of being unable to do that is the only reasonable argument against the use of finance to buy things "because they depreciate".

I think some people may not fully understand the rules of Man Maths. CH has perfectly described the basic concepts of man maths in his Blog. And yet some feel the need to spout on about the "dangers" of finance....... Lets make something clear to those who dont have the full understanding of Man Maths:

1) It is not Logical, but far more logical than womens logic. Women do not understand man maths. ever.

2) Finance is not a dirty word. It simply means i can afford something that doesnt require me to rob a bank, but may end up costing me my house........ There is NO down side!

3) Man Maths is calculated by a region with less nerves than your brain.... and resides in your pants (And yes i will initiate man maths if a car/bike gives me a "twinge")

4) An important one this.... One mans "mans math" does not always match that of another mans "man maths" (try saying that with a load of oppo on a road slippier than a greased weasel) Therefore, another man CANNOT JUDGE another mans "man maths"!!!!

5) If the item that is bought as a result of man maths turns out to be a steaming pile bull smeg, man maths is not to blame! God is.

Hope you enjoy the car Harris, looking forward to tyre shredding footage

Why. Why. WHY?!

This thread would be better if it stuck to interesting questions to Chris, with interesting answers back.

Instead its polluted with finance nonsense and stupid custard requests. Do you even know the context of the custard remark?! I think its safe to say the car is Chris'.

What about the old adage 'your either a ferrari man or a porsche man' . How long will it be before you are back where you belong, behind the alcantara clad wheel of an rs? You are probably missing it already?

Hi Guys

Can someone help a noob to understand something. Chris mentions in the article that he's £40k in and the rest on the never never (finance).

He was in a similar situation with the 4.0.

What options does he have when selling the car if finance is owing?

Chris

we know that, it'd just be nice to see a silly pic of him and it like he did with the 4.0

You really suspect that people don't believe he's bought the car? You do realise the significance of 'custard' don't you?

The same options that he would have if owned outright.

(Although a private buyer might wish to make their cheque out in the name of the finance house rather than 'C Harris Esq')

Sorry but I’m having trouble with the maths on £350 a month for a £90K car with £40K down. My loan calculator has that as 0.5% APR with a large balloon payment over 5 years. Drop the number of years or the balloon payment and the calculator fails because there are too many zeros after the decimal on the APR. Please can you give me the number of your finance co?

Some of the comments here seem to miss the point by a country mile... It's sad to see that some one has to actually defend his purchase.

Somebody buys a car
Explains the costs involved and the thinking behind the purchase
Shares experience with an online community

All this talk about renting (he put down £40K!!!), etc... is really not what this is all about.

If you love cars and the experience read the article and all that it implies for us petrol heads.

If you are a bean counter and can't get your head around the figures I'm sure that there are plenty of finance companies out there and websites that can help you.

In the meantime, I'm going to enjoy Mr Harris's time with this incredible machine...

Message to Chris Harris: Don't leave it too long before your next article, I can't wait to see how many people are still going on about your personal circumstances! Also, just got out of a 599GTB and I can't tell you how much fun (and possibily heart-ache!) you are going to have!

Personally, I prefer the 612.

The 612 is not the same kind of car of course, more GT and less raw, but it is maturing beautifully IMO and looks better now that it did when new when compared to others.

And there are a few manuals around. I know Chris Harris has had a 612 before, but I have a real soft spot for them and I'm not normally a fan of the dancing donkeys.
Had one: loved it. Would heartily recommend it to others.
Look at this. Just think, for the price of the likely cost of depreciation and finance cost of the 599, this manual box ( high mileage but loved ) 612 could be owned outright.

I find it amazing how sensitive Ferrari prices are to mileage.

Surely this 86,000 mile 612 has plenty of life in it given that big money has been spent on servicing.

I'd love to see how well this car has worn its age and mileage up close.

That's a really nice colour. Which one is it?

And Chris, well done for getting a 599, a lovely bit of kit! Love the pic with the tyres but think of the residuals! smile

And why is everyone going on about how he purchased it, if you don't agree with it then fine but there is no need for some of the comments on here.

There's a 2006 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti Manual with 20000m 2 owners on one of the trade sites with a start price of £50000. That'll give anyone reading an idea of typical V12 depreciation. I appreciate you might spend £5000 on service and making it lovely though.

A 599 for less than £100k is a lot of car for the money. I'd be tempted.
Your wife is about to make a voodoo doll shaped like me...
There is a 599 on Autoscout it's similar miles to the one CH has bought with a 12 month power warranty for the equivalent of £83k!
