That video clip in the original post is my favourite engine noise of any road car I've ever seen or heard. No ifs or buts.

I know that in this day and age, a 355 is far from the last word in performance, but to be fair it's still pretty rapid in comparison to most cars, and I think in terms of looks and sound it's probably the nicest ferrari made during my lifetime. As for the driving experience, well it's my dream car to own one day (in TDF Blue with manual gearbox and of course a loud exhaust).

Not sure if it's been posted yet but this clip of a 355 with Kreisegg exhasut is a close match with the tubi clip:

I have to say this is the best noise I've ever heard. Le Mans 2012 on the Mulsanne, filmed by yours truly.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y6teRY7evys&fea...

The noise is resonating off the armco, listen for the downshifts smile

Haha!!! I only just watched this last week for the first time in about 20 years!!!! Forgot just how good the opening scene is. Brilliant.

Thought the most memorable noise for me was the Renault F1's at Monaco in 2010. They sounded like a cluster bomb of grenades when braking for Sainte Devote.

Just spent over an hour trying to find something better than a 355. Everything I thought was better isn't.

I will own a 355 at some stage.
However, the Zonda 760RS does sound even more epic (IMHO) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yb05nRyDrY8 (1.25 onwards for the best noise)
Difficult to make absolute judgements from Youtube clips but that is THE best sounding car I have ever heard. Only Le Mans V12 Astons and the greatest of all, the V10 era F1 engines, are better and you cant drive them down to the shops

Alfa Romeo Tipo 33 Stradale, 2 litre V8, 230 BHP, it was at 270 in race form.

Almost as beautiful to listen to as it is to look at it, and its almost as good to look at as it is to drive, given its a Prototype endurance racer with some rather pretty body work.

Pure perfection.

YEP THE 355 LOOKS AND SOUNDS AWESOME, THE LAST GREAT FERRARI BEFORE THE GIZMOS STARTING DRIVING THE THING FOR YOU. ALWAYS BEEN A DREAM CAR AND WILL PROB REMAIN SO frown. A TIMELESS DESIGN WHICH HAS AGED GREAT SOMETHING WHICH I THINK A LOT OF MODERN CARS WILL STRUGGLE TO DO SO IMO.

The 360CS sounds great but to me they've always had a bit of "fart-can" about them and don't have as pure a sound as the 355. My cousin feels the opposite, that the 355 is too strident and doesn't have enough "oomf" as another poster said, and that the 360 and 430 sound a lot better.

The 355 is the bargain of the century considering the looks (much much prettier than 360, 430, and 2nd only to 458) and the sound, which I struggle to think of any other ~£30k car beating

The most violent sound I ever heard was that of a Ducati Desmosedici with standard pipes (I can only imagine what the race system is like) being started and blipped in the showroom at Ducati Dublin. I'm aware that the flywheel on most bikes weigh fk all compared to cars but the speed at which the revs rose and dropped on the Des was miraculous. It wasn't like a bike being revved, it was like a lion roaring. A bloke was there with his 5 yr old and his son covered his ears as it was so loud!

love it, simply love it. I cannot fault that sound as being erotically intoxicating, for a driver.

I'll add my current favourite, a BMW CSL Batwing with a 3.0 litre M30 and triple 45 DCOE Webers. Oh the sound!!! The M30 powered BMW sounds as good as that ford GT40 V8, and the M1, Oh, but to own one!!!

I've always thought this sounded better than either the Capristo or Tubi, at least on video. 355 with Quicksilver exhaust:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1g4F_anvfJs&fea...

Watched this again and again and decided I needed another 355 in my life. So last night i put a deposit down on my perfect spec car - manual, Berlinetta, Rosso/Crema, Carbon seats, Challenge grill...

So many great engine sounds, I don't think it's possible to say with certainty that there's a "best" one...

...except for this: the 2000 McLaren Mercedes F1, coming out of a slow corner.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wVRX7dEyQu4

Video doesn't do it justice unfortunately, but I still remember it as the best natural high-inducing mechanism I've ever experienced.

Yes the f355 exhaust note trumps all other cars I've actually seen on the road by a country mile, better than V12 or V10 and better than the 360 onwards engine Ferrari use now! It has the lost property of sounding amazing at normal road speeds and revs unlike the Ferrari which followed which sound crap at lower rpm!

Several times I've been tempted to buy one of these simply because of the exhaust note! And I may yet buy one with a Tubi!

I have had Nick Mason's book Into the Red since it came out and I still put the CD in to listen to several times a year. My favourites are the Bugatti T35 and the BRM V16. But then there's the DFV too and the 250GTO's V12. Too many decisions.

Edit - forgot the noise of an Audi quattro rally car.
