Yup. security in general of data is a concern of mine. Facebook is for friends and family to see pictures, updates and stuff about my life. It is not for unknown large scale entities to have access some or all of that data as a pre-req to using their website.

I don't use any sites that have Facebook as the only registration option. However, DriveTribe will be an exception as I'm suitably curious to see what it is all about.

But they aren't having my details, so I'll have to create a fake account too. A pain in the arse that is - and against Facebook policy I think.

Hopefully an alternative logon will be made available soon.

As everyone is promoting their tribes, my daughter's is Will Travel for Cars

She has a decent following on instagram - the tribe is for her and other subscribers to post content on special cars from travels and events across the globe

So then, after a day here are the good and bad points as far as I can tell. However, I am still only getting used to it, so not entirely sure if I'm doing everything correctly yet

Positives:

- Nice "look & feel", with a fairly logical order to things. Very much in an Instagram-way actually for me
- Some decent content on there
- Lack of YouTube-style "F*** yo momma" comments so far
- They haven't banned me yet for not using my real name (dummy Facebook account created)


Negatives:

- Having to use Facebook in the first place to login
- Struggling a bit to easily see what tribe a fellow member is leading (probably user error on my part)
- No central forum-style area to chat, although that's probably why it may not be a direct competitor to PH after all


Also, I'm a bit worried that I'm a tribe leader, and I may not have enough to post about. Especially when I see all the great content that the likes of Ben and others are generating on there. No wonder he's got nearly as many followers as Hammond already!

Anyway, will stick with it for the next while, and hopefully there's enough going on so that I don't get bored or put off like I have done with Instagram and Facebook in the past. Purely car-only content should help with that, as I've no interest in what others have for brunch or their cat's social escapades!

So, I sat with my Daughter yesterday, looking around and i got my invite code and looked around as a guest subscribing to a few tribes. I work in the online content world, and there is a term I am not that keen on but used a lot - Content 'Curators'. I know from the retail world that if you do not provide fresh content frequently, browsers lose interest and move on. The platform appears to let others post to your tribe, what we have not tried yet is seeing whether I can post to a tribe and my Daughter can approve or reject it, and whether she can share content on her tribe from other social platforms. My guess is that this is the direction the platform will be going, if it is not there yet. Its not properly live till next week, and it may be that some of the feeds of popular content will not start until there is greater traffic.

I'm interested to see how it pans out, personally I wish they'd exercise more control over who starts what tribes - there are already far too many "I like supercars" pages. I don't really want it turning into twitter or facebook with white noise. They harped on about promoting quality content, but I'm not seeing how they're doing that yet.

At the moment no, but it is something they are "working on"
