People that drive 50 on motorways - why?

When you're in a dangerous situation, very rarely is accelerating the answer. The only times I've ever had to accelerate out of danger is when I've done something daft to put myself in danger, like pulled out of a side road when I should have waited. And if I'd had a less powerful car in the first place, I would have waited.

Christ PH is going down hill. I have no problem with those that want to do 50-60 on the inside lane of a motorway for what ever reason. I cruise at 56-62 in my daily bus (Touareg) if I'm in no hurry, it does the best part of 10mpg better than trying to force a hole in the air at 75.
I do not hold up lorries, I do however get pissed off with idiots doing 65in the middle lane who see you on the inside waiting to pull out past a lorry or something when the lane to their right is clear but insist on crawling past you at less than 5 mph differential because they don't 'do' the 'fast lane'. And stick yo the middle lane, Zero observational skills. You should be flashing to let someone out like that before they know it themselves....

As an ex BSM qualified driving instructor, it was frowned upon if you didn't drive AT the speed limit on any road, unless there was a good reason not to.
PS. I get bored and loose interest, hence concentration if I don't perceive myself progressing at a reasonable speed. I'm sure many here will have seen the loan motor racing driver miles in the lead, who falls off due to loosing concentration. The brain NEEDS stimulation, or it goes (naturally) into switch off mode. I’m sure I read this somewhere regarding lone guard duty at night in the Army.

Exactly what I was thinking, you are encouraged to accelerate to the speed limit and keep up with the flow of traffic.If you're that worried about your MPG I think you've bought the wrong car and need to post a 'another what car' thread.
I had a fuel filter blocking once on the M11 and after overtaking a lorry started to lose power as the fuel flow was restricted.
I was towing roughly 2.5 tons in a Defender, so nearly 5 tons in total, now it normally holds 60mph easily and needed 4th on steeper hills but generally was no problem for other road users.
As soon as I struggled and was sitting between 45/50mph most people coming up behind was taken by surprise and acted like knobs. Swerving out at the last minute, Lorries trying to push me up the road and slowing themselves in the process instead of getting past etc. A few idiots even decided cutting back in very close to my bumper was a way of showing their dominance, sigh.
The problem was fixed quickly but how anyone would want to actively sit at 50 unless due to mechanical issues boggles my mind.

The brain needs stimulation. It depends upon context though. As for guard duty, the Romans sorted that centuries ago with a very pragmatic approach.PS. I think part of the problem is that there is an expectation that cars will be doing a certain speed, when drivers go too far either side, you get problems, you get Mr 520D late for a meeting doing 95 and Doris doing 45 there is a 50 mph speed differential, crashes occur,

very simplistic but really, 50 mph is too slow, lorries aren't so bad as they are massive and there is the expectation they are doing 50 or not much more but those cars doing 50 mph, usually in the middle lane are a pain, and a hazard, not so bad if they confined themselves to the left hand lane but they don't, causes bunching and more lane changing, and more incidents, not necessarily involving that car.
Just need to accept it, like cyclists, trucks, horses, pedestrians, roadworks, queues etc it is part of driving, just try and do your own well as you cant educate every other driver and its not worth the blood pressure, most are just a bit clueless and intent on getting where they are going, the journey and how they tackle it doesn't matter to them.

You can be a motoring enthusiast into bubble cars, 70s mopeds, etc. My mate rides a 1927 Harley. It weights a tonne and has about 15 hp I think. It would never get anywhere near 70. It takes half a mile to stop from about 40. Is he not allowed to be a PH?
That aside, this thread is about those who won't go faster, not about those who can't.
