200mph+ for less?

Power = torque (force) multiplied by speed (rpm).
Top speed is a function of power (work done by the engine) versus drag (work done by the air in holding the car back from going faster). Gearing is ideally chosen so that the two balance at the point when the engine is producing maximum power.
The McLaren F1 hit 241 mph at 7,800 rpm (they turned the 7,500 rpm limiter off), 400 rpm past its peak power point so when the power curve was falling off it's peak of 627 BHP. Gordon Murray calculated it would need about 750 BHP to go as fast as a Veyron. The modern 12C/650S runs out before 210 mph with broadly the same power as an F1, so must have quite a bit more drag. As others have said, sleek mid-engined sports cars are not always that sleek in practice!
In my experience 130 mph in an old M5 was quite routine, but 150 mph felt very different in terms of how quickly things came at you. I wasn't minded to go quicker, even on an autobahn. I'm sure a more modern car would feel different .

Kind of cheating with the low frontal area and not really enough wheels, but 310 BHP, rising to 326BHP with ram air and about 240MPH for "only" £47k brand new
Strictly not road legal but wouldn't take much to fit some parts from the road legal H2 and SVA it
Need some big balls to do 200+ on a bike !!
There is a video on Youtube about a guy with metal balls hitting 400+Km/h at Boneville on that thingStrictly not road legal but wouldn't take much to fit some parts from the road legal H2 and SVA it

Found this http://phors.locost7.info/phors06.htm Nice breakdown of the Physics involved... So which cars can beat the 200mph, without 600+ bhp?

Excellent. Thanks for that. Many things mentioned in there that we've forgotten. Especially in the debate of a saloon vs supercar. So a supercar requires a lot more power not just because of the downforce generating drag, but the high rolling resistance of some great fat tyres. Also add in some of some cars are permanent 4 wheeldrive (911 turbo) so add in additonal drive train losses compared to 2 wheel drive. So same power the saloon will go a lot faster than a fancy super/hyper car
BTW - open admission - I have a physics degree - please don't think less of me!
Here's a clip showing just how hard it is to reach 200mph the BMW rider is in his mates slipstream & still can't get there & that's just going by his speedo.

More it's about distance, which is why Bruntingthorpe is an indication but not a measure. I guess a high speed oval would br best, Milbrook? Could you do it at Rockingham?

Sorry etc etc
I was talking about the 5.5 tt, which from '13 is 550bhp standard. Are we at cross purposes here? Last time I got involved with that sketch was with my EVO VI TME I didn't wait for the warranty to expire on that. Started after 1500 miles from new.
Got a bit obsessive though😃
Bonneville is the place for this.
Or maybe Pendine, but not sure they allow 'proper' speed runs there anymore.
Being a long time fan of the nutters at Bonneville, most of really serious loonys there go for the light, streamlined, small frontal area, small turbo engine option.
So something small, light, low and with an easily uprated engine/ gearbox.
Mx5 with a hard top and turbo? £10 grand maybe? TT with the propshaft removed, chipped and a gearbox with taller ratios? £5k?

not cheap or anywhere remotely standard, but gives an idea of what it took to get a sierra there:

I love this guy, massive Narcissist who talks as though the stats of his car, mainly driven by someone else is some sort of official record that anyone cares about.http://www.fastestcosworth.com/
Fair play for chucking the thick end of £100k into a white taxi driven by his mate for bragging rights but rather him than me

Saying all the above chucking 100k at a cossie in itself was lunacy as it wasn't any sort of official top speed record and you could do the same speed for half the cost using another make ie 997 turbo
