I have the TTRS with that engine. It's sublime...but almost too quick.

No, scrub that...it is too quick! :-)

RRP is misleading unless a mug is seen coming. You can get 5K off that price. There isn't much to add to an R Line, maybe 3k if you want to tick all the must haves so top of the tree is realistically £38k. I can see a 350hp version being £45k out the door loaded which is where it should be if you look at the SQ5 (50k) and GLC 43 slightly higher again.
Discounts are available but only on pcp/hp deals and the discount is always paid in interest, I got a used bmw from coopers for 29400 down from 29995 and the salesman said I can easily get 2 k off the price til I said I would be getting a loan elsewhere with a cheaper rate. He went upstairs spoke to his manager and came down with the final price being 29400. The discount I could have had would have doubled in interest rates.

Yes used cars are different to new and the benefits are bigger but my point stands, full price of that Tiguan including the final payment with or without a discount will still nudge 50k with interest.
completely incorrect.

I'm sure the engine really suits the TT, probably more than the V6,

They could probably do with a sub 300bhp softer model running that engine as the mini-GT the TT does so well.

Why do people bother with this sector? Why not just get a highline spec TDI? I seriously do not understand why people want to buy a hot a version of a baby SUV.... its hardly a B road weapon.... is it to feel good at the traffic lights?
But who wants a diesel of any spec any more !..... I for one would prefer a high spec Petrol even though I have a W124 5ltr petrol & a C6 Corvette !

I don't know why people feel the need to justify choosing an SUV/Crossover - there's obviously something about them that buyers find attractive.

What I don't understand is the obsession with making them sporty. What I'd like is a quiet, comfortable, wafty SUV like you get in the States. On small diameter wheels with massive sidewall tyres, so they're impervious to kerbs and potholes. What we get instead are fairly ordinary SUVs like Tiguan with stupidly big wheels and stiff suspension.
I guess it's because I like to think that for every effect there was a cause and for every decision there was a reason, preferably a logical one.
And I can find hardly any logical reason to go for one over an estate.
Unless your requirements are really specific but then you'd probably be better off with an offroader.

As for sporty - SUV -> S stands for 'Sports' I believe so manufacturers are taking this to heart.

You're not wrong. 150ps 2L model weighs 1700kg ffs. 88 ps/tonne. Some models weigh north of 1800kg.

A hatch would be more comparable - Golf hatch vs Tiguan, for example. I'm sure the estate version would carry more.

Anyway, who buys cars using logic? If people used logic then a Dacia something or other would do the job.

Because having the ability to overtake slow moving traffic quickly and safely, is more appealing than having to take a deep breath as you crawl past.

I like your approach. But I can't find any logical reason to prefer a Golf Estate to our Tiguan apart from a modest mpg difference which is more than offset by the depreciation delta.

Dacia argument isn't quite right, as you assume that people would only be looking for the cheapest car available.

I am not, I am asking why, help me understand why people buy these things? Afterall we are all here to learn are we not? I love the application on the Audi RS but I feel that this is a complete waste in the baby SUV sector.
You're not wanting to learn anything, you're just attempting to belittle and be rude about people that buy these things which is completely different to holding a reasonable opinion that you don't like the car. You're extending some sort of dislike towards the person which is a bit odd and not a very healthy mind set to have.

We all like different things but why the vitriol towards people?

It's quite reasonable that someone would think it's a smart looking car, plenty of room and kit, that also goes like the clappers and sounds good and has that raised SUV driving position that many people like. So they'll buy one.

You might not agree but it's not your money, so why all the spite?

Picking my Tiguan 'R' with 237 bhp engine ( diesel) up on 3rd sept.
Looking forward to it to, it will be a work vehicle for me as we are in construction industry.

I'd be keen to hear your thoughts on the engine and whether it is more than adequate. Cheers

You've obviously not bought a new car in a while...

A8 starts at £65k.
Base model Tiguan with a 1.4 is £24k plus options. Current 'top spec' Tiguan is £39.5k plus options and that's with a 2.0TDi.

That is a real shame. The Golf is crying out for that engine. I'm not entirely convinced that scenario would pan out though. R/S3 very similar. Audi one notch up on fit/finish image.
