I've had a busy but really enjoyable couple of days. The weather could not have been kinder.

Here it is.

Tomorrow I'll take a picture of old and new together. I'm also planning to do a short write up of my musings on the E38 (mainly) and some related comparing and contrasting.

Looks good. Correct grill as well.

What engine?

It's the 2.7 TDI. Perhaps not the purist's choice but I'm happy with it and it suits the car well. To my mind it's been a fascinating comparison with what I've had before.

I've never been convinced by the diesel in X350s on paper at least: they don't seem to offer a huge benefit over the 3.0 V6 in terms of economy, and unlike the petrol V6, seem rather prone to expensive faults. I know a few people who swear by them though, so I guess maybe they're one of those engines that make sense when you actually drive one?

Was just looking at the W126 at the end of the last vol and ebay suggested this as an alternative. Not too bad a choice I thought.

Here you go. I hope others don't mind.

Thank you, that's an interesting and useful post. Black isn't my natural choice either but your car looks really good.

Plenty to ponder, especially as I returned to Southern UK today for the week-end. The Lexus was in its element; motorway miles despatched with ease and comfort, and an enormous quantity of stuff packed-in now for the return. The cooling/aircon is second to none in my experience and, now I know how to stop over-cooling my nethers, offers a most pleasant environment. I'm averaging 25mpg which, considering I keep it in PWR mode and enthusiastically despatch dawdlers both sides of the Channel, as well as dawdle myself as I go to the shops and use it for mundane tasks, doesn't seem at all bad.

Same as my old man's.

I've found it perfectly adequate but the bork potential sounds high compared to the petrol.

One hell of a deadzone on the throttle though.

No problem. I just read it back and corrected a few glaring errors, mind.

Your Lexus is a very nice thing, I'd be happy to waft around in it. You've got a great example there.

Cooled seats in the Volvo would be nice, but with them not being full leather, I've never felt overly warm in the gentleman's area. The air con is superb, though. I'd rather it were RWD, but it handles very tidily for a fairly large FWD estate. I actually like it that much that I'm already thinking I could end up with the 4WD Polestar version after this lease is up (the 20" wheels on the Polestar would have to go though). I'm currently at 31mpg at still climbing fairly quickly.

I realise that it's totally against the 1-5 Barge ethos, but I must admit I'm enjoying the pain/worry free experience.

Anyway, on with the Barging, apologies for the temporary derail.

Something of a potted mot history and technically below thread budget but purchasing and allowing some contingency would see change out of £1500.

I had the pleasure of the x23 lump in an e36 touring and it was silky smooth (I6) and seldom felt short of power, it might weigh a little heavier in an e39 but if you’re hankering for a cheap estate this may be worth a punt?

A little bit ‘pov spec’ mind you.

On a smaller scale, petrol E46 Tourings - any good?
The load area is tiny but they do drive nicely. Chap in my road has a black 320i which sounds fantastic - a quick look in Wikipedia confirms it has 6 cylinders, which is the correct number for a BMW

They're a great car, but a load lugger it is not. Handy to carry a dog or a pram but some of the larger prams would fill it iirc. Did 55k in 18months in mine and it was really very good.

I don't see anywhere in the adverts explaining why it's spares or repairs?

That advert would land the dealer in court should anything go wrong and he not accept responsibility.

It is very cheap tho. I am tempted.

The advert does suggest that it has at least two un-MOTable tyres

Thinking of changing from my old Omega for a Jaguar i last had a Series 3 XJ6 in the 90's and loved it.

This has popped up on my Facebook feed - https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/21047737...

2002 Jaguar XJ Sport 3.2 V8 85k Short MOT but great Mot history not done many miles in the last few years.

Thinking of going for a look this week as its not far from me so any tips for things to look out for would be great.
