Now do a bar chart showing the total for this thread. smile
I’m such a nerd I was doing that...results later
So here are the results

I used data from 126 posters... with easy to read numbers
Bikes, Vans, Lawnmowers excluded
This is raw data, there are some outliers... e.g. one chap owned 15 Ferraris.

  • 1,844 Cars Owned
  • Average 14.6 Cars owned
  • Highest Individual 56 Cars Lowest Individual 1 Car
  • 56% of you have owned at least one BMW, 50% of you have owned at least one Ford, 47% of you at least one Volkswagen
  • 65 Brands mentioned, notable exceptions Bentley, Tesla, Dacia

I just buy anything with a manual gearbox, an N/A straight 6 petrol engine and RWD - so that seems to be BMWs only. laugh

Fantastic AndrewCrown!

However, the charts simply list the number of different car brands we have all owned. This doesn't necessarily suggests any form of brand loyalty.

Still, a great effort but perhaps change the titles of your charts...?

Perhaps if we listed bands owned then a Y, N or NS (not sure) for likelihood to buy again, that would give a better idea?

For the record, this is what I’d consider on past purchases:
MG - N (It’s just a name nailed to nails these days)
Volvo - Y (Great to see Volvo ‘on a roll’ again)
BMW - N (Just not what they once were, sadly)
Porsche - Y (if the other half had the ‘sensible’ car!)
Mercedes - Y (I’ve only just forgiven them for the MB/Chrysler years)
Jaguar - Y (but not current XE/XF generation. Original XF x250 and XK x150 were superb)
DS - NS (New DS3 crossback yuck/too small. DS7 meh. Need to see what eventually replaces the ‘5)

Forgot to add, the only time you could say I showed loyalty was at the outset of my ownership. First car of my own was a mk1 Golf (wasn’t massive fan of VWs, would have preferred a French supermini), but it was a cheap find in the local paper.

Grew to like it a lot, when got first proper job then replaced it with mk2 Golf (Driver, couldn’t afford GTI insurance). When that got written off, police said how well it stood up to being t-boned by a Rover 800 so I went straight out and bought another.

The VW loyalty only continued because in later years I was able to afford a mk1 Gti and a mk2 16v as fun second cars when they were still cheap as chips (both mot’d and less than £500 each).

Now I just go for what’s practical and good value. Sad times.

So no loyalty. That being said I'm mulling the replacement of the alfa romeo and there is a good chance it will be from one of the above brands.
