Isn't the Cup supposed to be their lightweight "track focused" version? at 1200Kg it seems a bit weighty to me - esp. for a 2 door, 4 cylinder hatchback. I guess that's why it needs a 200hp engine - fully loaded up with the shopping it'd be a dog otherwise....LOL!!

Maybe it's my age, but I just don't get this at all. And Clio Sport - isn't that a contradiction of terms ;-)
I doubt it's a 200bhp engine, the 197s put out around 180-185 in independant tests. Meaning that the car actually had a worse power/weight ratio than the 172/182.

Still, the only new hot hatch worth a look in my eyes.
I had a blast in the cup last night against one, im guessing a dealers, and my cup didn't walk away, but it was quicker.. not hugely, but it was.. I guess the guy thought he could out brake me into the roundabout, but no.. but i do have uprated pads/disks, so a little unfair ..

I would still like one thou.
Ah the old "road test". Completely meaningless.

The 172/182s rarely made their quoted power either. More like 150-160bhp if we're going to start spouting such irrelevant nonsense.
Both the 172 and 182 made around 165-170 if I remember.

It's hardly irrelevant, If a car is sold as 200 bhp, I bloody well want 200bhp not 180. I don't want it so that down the pub I can say it has "200 bhp".

Thats how I roll

The 197 and 200 in the names refers to PS, not BHP. When I was in eyeing up a 197 Cup earlier this year the dealer had a Dyno for his own 197 Cup which showed it was producing a peak 190bhp (non-modified) but that's not to say all cups give 190...

See im still at, Why would you buy this new?
youve got 15k in your pocket you could have

225bhp quattro TT full leather 13000 miles £13,500

Escort Cossie Big turbo model, 13000 miles on full professional stage 2 engine rebuild, including T34 hybrid turbo.£14,500

Mini Cooper Sport 500 in amazing condition with only 3700 miles. £13,995

this ones just because im a fanboy

Ford escort mk2 (1979)
full roll cage, two ltr pinto engine twin webber carbs, new diff, lsd, lowered suspension, chrome mini lite wheels braided fuel hoses, willwood brake upgrade, five speed gearbox, roller top mounts, new steering rack, £7500

If you want something for dicking around in. Why a 200bhp renault. When all these cars that are cool and most of which have finished depreciating and have started to get more expensive are sat there saying "buy me"
I'd take the Clio over a lardy, far too fashionable and boring gen. 1 TT Quattro any day of the week. Those things weigh nearly 1.5 tonnes redface. The rest are awesome thumbup

Going to be cheeky here but hey..

I am the Sales Manager of a well known Renault Dealer in South London, if you are looking to buy one or any Renault, please feel free to PM/Email me for a very good price. (I will not be beaten by another Renault dealer in the UK, if I can help it)

1200kg it may be but I don't think that there are any hot hatches any lighter

Hmmm, granted, the 70 mph was somewhat understated, but yes the clio was accelerating.

Honda can create a fantastic car with a decent interior and driving characteristics, but renault seem only to be able to do one as opposed to both?? The most important factor, good to drive, has been covered, and yes i have driven my friends clio sport for a few hundred miles along various types of roads. That steering wheel is functional, yes, as is the rest of the cabin. But more these days I'll find myself stuck in traffic, as opposed to blasting down a North Yorkshire B road, and for the money i'd pay for the clio i'd want the inside to be at least fairly appealing???

The Clio is undoubtedly very good, but the honda civic type r is better (not the newest version that looks like its out of star trek!). I'd spend my money on a 2005 facelift type r and keep the rest for a rainy day thank you.
EVO Top 100 Cars, the Clio Trophy was number 7. Where was that Civic of yours?

When it comes to hot hatches, there is a reason for the french bias.

Absolutely! And very frustrating it was too, even the dealer couldn't understand why they couldn't get their hands on one for me. Not losing any sleep over it though, it was only going to be for doing the shopping in.

I don't really get the Clio bashing, I'm just pleased that somebody out there is willing to make a small and very decent hot hatch. Sure 13-14k will get you lots of interesting second hand alternatives but if you are smart you can turn up performance bargains for pennies, so its hardly a fair comparison.

The best bit is, that in a few years time the Clio 200 Cup RS whatsit will itself be an even bigger second hand performance bargain.

And it's great for someone like myself as a performance bargain.
I can (just about!) to afford to insure a 197, but a lot of other stuff I'd consider around that price point is completely uninsurable! frown

No, I would have thought a hatchback ideal for doing the shopping[?]. You can get several Waitrose bags in a hatchback.
