Middle Lane Drivers, Do they Ever Notice?

Legally I've never been sure if that actually is undertaking or not, as you haven't moved left to pass them - you've merely continued unimpeded in an empty lane. You'd hope any police seeing it would have the sense to pull the nugget in the middle lane in that scenario but you never know.
But more than that possibility above, I just get nervous that they will suddenly wake up and move from L2 back to L1 without checking their blind spot.
It's not undertaking in the legal sense your maintaining speed in your empty, correct lane. Surely. But more than that possibility above, I just get nervous that they will suddenly wake up and move from L2 back to L1 without checking their blind spot.

Trust me you are perfectly safe from them moving into L1 all of us sudden. Just pass them by on the inside without any drama and they never even notice. I have done this many times and not once have I had a flash of lights or anything, trust me they don't even know. Totally zoned out.

Many drivers will only drive in Lane 2 on 2 lane carriageways. Even if Lane 2 merges into Lane 1, they will resolutely stay in Lane 2 until the bitter end (and expect you to defer to them). It's almost as if Lane 2 is the '#premiumlane.
I've noticed increasingly on 3 lane sections people taking up position in Lane 2 - not overtaking, nobody around (apart from me some distance away from them) and I always wonder why? Even the safety argument (as woolly as it is) doesn't stack up because they are putting themselves closer to danger.

Same here but it worries if the numpty in L2 is in auto, and decides to move into L1 at last, without seeing you cruising up the inside, but I dont think it is undertaking.
As Tony says above, lots of attention applied to vehicle on approach, and its road position...all good so far, they rarely seem to move tbh.MDT said:

I do wonder if the recent ad campaign for this has made any difference? There is tonnes of info online about how it's better to sit in lane 1, how much better it makes everything, there are videos galore and people still insist on doing it. My favourite recent comment either on here or Facebook was one person saying overtakes are dangerous so they stay in the middle lane but then make others do potentially 4 lane changes to get past them..

Middle Lane Morons present a particular challenge. Either I sit behind them in Lane 2 and wait or I reluctantly 'undertake' them in Lane 1. Neither should be necessary but they solemnly refuse to budge
Passing on the left is different from undertaking.
Passing on the left is maintaining your speed and lane and moving past another vehicle on your right hand side, this is the same as passing someone who is turning right or who has slowed or stopped due to traffic conditions.
Undertaking is changing speed or lane in order to pass someone on the left before moving back into your original lane.
As I understand it.

My record is 6 orbits. They noticed after the 3rd but kept chugging away in lane 2 at 60mph.
As I completed orbits 4, 5 & 6 they got steadily angrier, screaming, jumping up and down, gesticulating, etc but never pulled into lane 1 or changed their speed.
Unfortunately we got to the point where I had to turn off- I've always wondered how many more orbits I could achieve depending on their journey & other traffic.

Person spots someone doing something silly and decides to trump their actions by doing something much more stupid. Then brags about it......

I don't bother changing lanes for them anymore. I just carry on in lane one and undertake them.
From my observations, lane-hogging is generally exhibited by older drivers. On the whole, younger drivers tend to exercise far better lane discipline.
It is not technically an undertake though, it is just staying in your lane and maintaining your speed. From my observations, lane-hogging is generally exhibited by older drivers. On the whole, younger drivers tend to exercise far better lane discipline.
If you came up behind them in L2, move to L1 and back in to L2, then that would be undertaking/ an undertake.
Sure you realise this though.

Personally I've not noticed any real link between age, gender or any other factor. Young, old, male, female, black, white, asian and I imagine the whole set of alphabet people all seem to have the ability to do things that are in their own mind much safer/better/more efficient than following rules, guidance or laws designed to help them and keep them safe. Ooh they flashed furiously. I had the nerve to flout whatever rules they'd made up in their head I guess. Then after half a mile in the lane they should have been in all along they left the motorway to go home and post about it on whatever the MLM equivalent of PH is.

On a recent trip that involved the M1, I did think that there were fewer MLMs than before and that the recent chatter + gantry signs (keep left unless overtaking) might be having an effect.
It's not really an excuse but I can kind-of understand MLMs wanting to avoid the tramline ruts in lane 1. Which leaves the TLTs (third-lane tts) on four-lane carriageways with no excuse at all.

I'm guessing MLD's are the same people who enter a motorway at 40mph!
I use the M20 every day to and from work, and the number that go down the slip road at 40 or even less in some instances and crawl onto the motorway (whilst backing up several cars) is astounding!
With the amount of HGV's going to or from Dover on the road, you need to be doing 70 to ensure safe entrance to the motorway, yet these clowns don't see that!
My BiL is an awful driver who does exactly this, and wonders why he's had two collisions with HGV's this year!
Rant over.

MLM are bad but a growing trend are people who get scared of on coming traffic and brake, ive been in my wife's uncles car and he does it, two lorries can pass each other no probs but he brakes heavy when another car comes towards him. Saw a Motorway Maintenance Transit van on the M26 Saturday morning under taking on the hard shoulder, extreme undertaking..
