This morning at Tesco Lea Valley just off the north circular:

Thanks for that. Not a million miles from Tesco Saffron Walden who on Wednesday were as they’ve been for weeks 1.509 for E10 so I assume 1.579 for E5 - not bought any for a couple of months.

Bradford, I'm swapping from 170p/l Shell E5 to Esso 99+ 160p/l plus 5p/l discount for 300 nectar points on app, so 155p/l.

I was thinking the same after I filled up at Shell for 169.9 again last night. I've always used Shell, not least because they have two local stations that are conveniently placed at the start/end of most journeys I do, but 15p/l is quite a big saving even on my limited mileage.

The only issue that I have is that my local-ish Esso stations seem to be about the same price!

My local Tesco no petrol whatsoever

You're not having much luck! Like me about 5-6 weeks ago. I had to go to 4 stations before I found E5.
Finally got some tonight. Paid 151.99 for Tesco 99.
My local Tesco now out of E10 again. Just E5 available.

Tesco Bishop Auckland this morning was at 146p for M99 and you had your choice of pump (both in terms of fuel type and pump, really quite quiet). As far as I'm aware we (my local area at least) haven't experienced the lack of go juice that other parts of the country seem to be experiencing when it comes to E5 fuels.

Quite a bit of incorrect info in that thread.
Shell vpower is 99 RON so not sure what difference he did manage to notice.
And not all Esso 99 RON is zero ethanol either.

There are demonstrable differences on their spec sheets (higher MON for M99, for example). I've replied further in that thread.

Interesting, I didn't know about MON ratings so thank you.
I've just brimed my twin turbo V8 with vpower though as Shell kindly gave me 10p/litre off but next time the light comes on I'll see if there's a Tesco nearby.

Possibly, but Esso 99 RON is E0 in many parts of the country including where I live.

And a mate of a mate of mine who volunteers at Brooklands said they tested a sample of Tesco Momentum (99 RON) and that was also E0, which is handy as it's much cheaper than the Esso option!

One of my mates - no specific knowledge on the subject just an average observer like us - seems to think that the refineries produce the petrol and it is then distributed to all forecourts so it is the same fuel. I know we have discussed this here before. Some people here believe the 99 or 98 is an additive which is added to the standard 95 fuel. But surely the ethanol must be added at source so the refinery. So maybe this makes sense that all E99 in the area is E0. But that got me thinking about the additive used to make 99 over 95. If 95 is E10 say in some area. How can an additive make this E5. This would only work if the additive is litre per litre similar in volume. So lets say we have 50 litre of basic 95 with E10 then this contains 5 litres of Ethanol. You would have to add 50 litres of E0 to get the Ethanol content overall down to E5. Which then does not feel like an additive as to me an additive is like only a few % compared to the overall volume. So do the refineries make 95 E0 and then E10 is achieved with an additive? And similarly would 99 E0 be achieved with 95 E0 and an additive? Or do they make 95 E10 and also 99 E5 at the refinery? Does this explain why 99 in an area is E0 cross multiple brand forecourts because the refinery only makes one batch of 99 E0 and it is shared across brands. So we are back to saying it is the same fuel. I assumed 99 was achieved by adding an additive to 95 but this doesn't make sense with the E number or percentage unless E10 is also achieved with an additive - of all Ethanol. Am I making any sense here?

Filled up with Tesco M99 at 144.9ppl on the way back from Chester Zoo today, in Widnes Tesco. Our nearest two Shell are still 164.9ppl for V-Power, making for a £20/tank difference between the two 99 RONs alone. Suffice to say I'll be sticking with Tesco for now, as Shell's money off voucher doesn't even start to close the gap.

I have absolutely no affiliation to the content creator - but I respect the effort put into this clip;

Personally I've always favoured Tesco Momentum 99 years ago when running my petrol cars, and will continue to use it in my current SLK55 AMG, the video above indicates why.

Great video, which confirms many of our suspicions.

I really want to find out the result of that but I cannot stand a 20 minute video for what should be three paragraphs, 45 seconds of reading, and an appendix of raw data.

This trend of every thing being turned into a long video of wiffling really is st. I'll go away and shout at clouds now.

Just had this email from Shell. Anyone know what changes they are making?

  • New and Improved Shell V-Power: Compared to previous generation Shell V-Power.

So with the home brew extra ethanol mix do they need to pump and inject more volume of fuel to make it work?

I agree. If anyone could give a synopsis it'd be much appreciated smile
