There is definitely a hint of Saab
In which case Saab must have copied Renault. That or it's merely a coincidental resemblance. It's hard to emulate something 9 years before it exists.
Not saying it emulates it, just that it has a similar SAAB like shape. Pure coincidence I expect more than anything else.

Having seen loads of R12's, a couple of Denems and loads of 900's I don't think they look anything like each other anyway, so I dunno why I'm even debating the point laugh

A slopey boot lid wasn’t exactly out there in the 70s, mk2 escort, avenger, the skoda estelle even managed it with an engine in there.

The SAAB 99 saloon was launched a year after the R12. Still its not a copy, but its far closer in terms of age smile

Zastava Koral In. The "modernized" Yugo for 2002-2008

Unlike previous Yugo models which most had old Fiat engines, this one got a Peugeot 1124cc fuel injected petrol engine with 60 hp, and was one of the fastest Yugos you could get, unlike previous models that had 45 or 55 hp. In addition it got "Modernized styling upgrades" This was one of the last Yugos to ever be produced.

I saw a Mazda CX-8 today, which I’d never heard of, then googled it and found out there’s also a CX-9, which I’ve also never heard of or seen previously. Three rows of seats in each apparently

Stunning lines with the side and the rear of the car but just doesn’t really suit the brutish squared off front

Always loved that (and better now it’s back with the original-style bumpers and wheels), lot of OSI-Ford in the rear of it.

Came across a video about the coolest car Japanese car you've never heard of: Isuzu Impulse/Piazza RS Turbo

Handling looks tidy with help from Lotus

Isuzu weren't done yet. There was also the Gemini/I-Mark RS Turbo.

Looks mega fun to drive

Were these sold in the UK? I was still a kid in the late 80s.

Yes, they were.
From the era of when GM owned everything including Isuzu and Lotus, hence the in-house input from Lotus to smarten up the handling of the Piazza.

For some reason I always have the rear of the Piaza etched in my memory.

Very Porsche 928esque
