The Joy of Running an Old Shed

I think its the boredom more than anything and the itch to get another shed. As mentioned i'll run it through the winter, and see how I get on. Work might be re-locating closer to home so i might have to chop it in as the diesel will not be needed.
One day after writing this we get confirmation that our new office is moving closer to home, so my commute is cutting down 30miles round trip to 10miles round trip. The move isn't happening for another year, but looks like I will be in a shed sooner rather than later v15ben said:
I'm considering similar (Aygo/107/C1 or Picanto) in the new year as a city shed.
6K miles a year, cheap as chips and park literally anywhere.
Any specific issues I should look out for?

Expect the boot to be full of water in 99% of them. It's normal but easy to fix with a screwdriver, some cleaning solution and rags and some thick foam strip from Screwfix.
I love mine. Costs me £1.67 a month to tax, £20 a month to insure and can get 2 months from a tank of fuel which costs about £45. Depreciation seems to stop once they get to 8+ years old as they are all £1500 for a decent one so long as it doesn't have moon mileage, regardless of age beyond that.

Using my shed for a few months now, all good but the other day I was in traffic and thought about safety. I carry my 4 year old son in the car and made me think that a more modern car would be safer on a collision. Made me reconsider the shed life a little. Have you guys thought/worry about that? My shed is a 16 year old Honda Civic perhaps not the safest shed out there...
Meh. Looks like you're trying to find some reason to buy something new to me. Oxford1971 said:
Grr, the coldest morning of the year so far and only half of my Focus Windscreen seems to be heating, The wrong half too !
Have an empty drinks bottle in the kitchen somewhere, then when you see that the windscreen is frozen just fill it with luke warm water and poor it over the windscreen. Then you can clear the screen immediately without fking on with a scraper or waiting for the heated windscreen to warm up. Leave the bottle in the car in case you have the same issue after work, and then just remember to take it back into the house when you return home.

I had the 140bhp 5 pot in my V70 shed. The engine was so smooth I would've spread it over toast if I could. Made a great noise and had some poke too.
I do want a new shed but as soon as I get in the saab I just remember how rare to find a car in that condition for £450 would be again. STIfree said:
Top shedding. I'd love to see a picture of all those together on your drive (or in your shed?)
I live at the bottom of a cul de sac, so two are on the road outside the house, the other four in the communal spaces, with two spaces left over for visitors after my neighbours have parked their one-car-per-household. Amazingly, no animosity whatsoever - in fact the neighbours come out and reminisce about 90s cars with me !Edited by STIfree on Thursday 28th November 21:36
One of these days I will do the full on line-up and snap them for prosperity.

I think that's fair tbh. Shed life is fine as a daily for yourself, but when transporting kids about it's reasonable/sensible to give strong consideration to safety. I don't mind driving a crap old car, but I wanted something decent for my wife when she got pregnant and now that we've got a baby. One of the reasons I got rid of the E36 328i and went for the E91 330i.Parent + Child Parking FTW.
I’m not sure if I’m doing the shed thing right.
I got my £500 Saab 93 aero 2 years ago put 45k miles on it but it have spent £2k on it in that time.
Yes £1k of that was the clutch but the rest it’s just been tyres, brakes, oil changes.

If you're not buying the Accord, would you mind sharing the link? Other sheddists may be interested!
Of course! https://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/...

A proper girl's car ^ ! You probably look about as daft in that as I do in my C1 .
Not sure those decals would be staying if it were mine, given their similarities to another well known symbol.
Eh, I'm a 5'7 tubby bearded guy with long curly hair, I've been called a stupid cow by unsuspecting drivers who look at my hair and assume I'm a "bloody woman driver" Eh, my last car was a Citigo, I'm okay with piddly little motors, I don't have much choice either way Not sure those decals would be staying if it were mine, given their similarities to another well known symbol.
The previous owners were a pagan couple, and the pentagrams are supposedly a symbol of safety and protection...
I don't mind people looking at my car and assuming I'm a satanist, perhaps the fear of invoking a curse might mean people will leave me alone

I've got a 2008 polo bluemotion which I've taken from 118k to 170k. I put a new turbo on it a couple of years ago (£1500) and now try and change the oil every 5k. I'll look at refreshing the suspension next year, even if that costs me a grand it's still a drop in the ocean compared to what a newer car would cost in depreciation / lease payments.
For me, better the devil you know.
Been doing the shed thing for last 6 months for the tip runs etc. Started with a £150 zafira which served its purpose quite well but the insurance and tax was over £100 a month. Got double purchase price when sold
Just bought a 2009 megane 1.5dci 106 model with 56k miles on it for £250. Busted window reg and no mot. Flew through the mot. Fixed a water leak £30 a year tax and it runs on fresh air
