The Charade did go through my mind but I'm sure they're pretty rare - can't find any at all on eBay, there's a fun-sounding GTTi in the classifieds but it was up for over 2k. There's also Starlet Glanza Turbo which is a 1.3 16V turbo but even more expensive (and the turbo puts me off).

Some people put Puma engines in Ka's.

I thought the sportka would be out of the bag of sand catagory, plus the leather weighs it down.
I was just browsing some ford forums and apparently a 2.0 zetec is an easy enough swap with the edition of an extra 2.0 engine mount, reinforcing a wing to accept the mount and a larger flywheel and clutch to handle the torque but the standard gearbox can handle it they say!

I think it would really have to be an obscure jap micro hatch, the 1.3 sirion has 101bhp and is only 850kg theres one on autotrader for near enough £1500 so bit pricey, a bit ugly but more modern with such features as 'illuminated ashtray' and a 'digital clock' (to be fair it seem well equipped, plus it cant drive too badly at 850kg and with 100 horses to drag it along).
Found a 1.8 baleno for £750 but probably a bit heavy.

So, perhaps we need to make SOTW BMW only ?

Do people really not get SOTW, its meant to be about variety and there are only so many types of whiffy old BMW and most have been done, Garlick and co do their best to bring some esoteric and interesting sheds in for your delectation and all you can say is "BMW please" or even just barges, even barges will run out pretty quickly. How would an E34 525i be "far much more fun" ? both fun in different ways but these have a reputation for being "a hoot" ((c) Pistonheads 1999), why choose a 525i E34 anyway, too middle of the road, at least go for a 540i or an M5, but oh we had one of those a few weeks back.

As for PAS being "too heavy", get down the gym and stop being a big girl.

I just DO NOT get the slightest little appeal in a tinny front-wheel-drive shopping car. I drive about 420 miles a week and the last thing (OK, one of the last things) I'd want to do it in is a little FWD tin box. OK so it might be fast-ish round a track, whoop! I don't drive round a track to work, I drive along pot-holed A roads. I did own an Elise about 6 years ago. Awful car too. Not even that quick when I was in Germany, as it didn't want to go in a straight line above 110mph. I also had a Mk1 MX5, now THAT was good fun! However, I'd stick with a BMW even though I don't really like them.

I think your totally nissing the point of these cars, Of course if your driving loads of miles a nice second hand Audi/Beemer/Volvo/Jag are (obviously) better for wafting along the motorway in comfort and having a reserve of power in the process.

These tinny FWD shopping cars are meant to give a bit of excitement when your having a B road blast and offer a raw driving appeal compared to the luxobarges you mention.

Jumping from an Audi A6 2.8 Quattro into a pals 205 gti once was a relevation in terms of driver appeal and steering feel - It was a great fun car which i felt connected to the road, The Audi was a fantastic car, nippy and very very comfortable but sometimes i'd arrive at a destination and couldn't quite remember how i got there where as the 205 was entirely the opposite, I felt like a kid again and i loved it, I was gutted when i handed the keys back and climbed back into my cosseting, com fortable, fast but of so boring Audi.

The Rallye is not a car for doing loads of miles up and down the motorway but offers a great fun and cheap way of providing thrills at legal(ish) speeds.

I think all Rallye owners would agree with me, that 420 miles a week in one would be hell (OK, I did 2500 miles in a week in mine in May, but I'm a little odd hehe). I do 200 miles a week along an A road (or a couple of B's if the traffic's slow) and while it's not as comfy as pretty much any newer car / barge / anything on the road, it's drivable, and when there's a gap in the traffic it's fun and it eases the boredom of a 20 mile commute. Get off down some B roads on a weekend and you won't stop smiling, you'll forget all about the bumps and rattles biggrin

It's interesting that you liked the MX-5, makes me thing that you've maybe not tried a Rallye? A couple of mates of mine have gone on to MX-5s after 106s and found them to be a very similar concept, lightweight, no fuss, focused on handling and fun in the corners, not licence-losing straightline speed - just with the addition of being RWD. It's certainly something I considered when it comes to replacing my Rallye. If you haven't driven one, try one. I've turned a few non-believers in mine, on track and on road. Nobody expects it to be as fun as it is, even myself before I bought my first one, but as soon as I drove it, I was hooked!

Finally, to add to somebody else's question about modern equivalents, I'm sure I've read somewhere that the S1, coming up to 20 years old, is still the most powerful N/A 1.3 in a production car! I certainly can't think of anything more powerful and I think that's an impressive stat biggrin

I'd agree that a small, tinny car isn't ideal for a 400 mile round trip, but I find that even my wife's under-powered, soft-spec Mk1 Fabia is quite a laugh to drive. It puts me in mind of Paddy Hopkirk on the Monte. (Her previous car, a Micra, was a terrible handler, although the engine was superb)

Exactly! This car doesn't appeal to everyone... however if you did drive round a track in one you would see its appeal but as you dont you wont.

The 106 Rallye isn't meant for driving 420 miles a week along potholed roads, its for fun times.

How can it be any worse than a modern bmw with huge alloys, rock solid seats and suspension? So it'll be a little louder but its made it to over 15 years old without rusting away to nowt or loosing alot of its power (i spent the weekend looking at rusty overpriced e46 bmws, never heard of brake lines rusting through on flakey french hatches, ppc's m3 makes 185bhp today) give me an honest stbox anyday over a 30 year old reputation of quality.

Re rallye james the daihatsu sirion makes 101 bhp from a 1.3 also remember 1.3 v techs make a fair bit of power.

How about a delete button on ph mobile my phone likes to post everything 2 or 3 times?

but isn't trying to get a soft loxo-barge round round-a-bouts etc. good fun? I also had a 24V 3.0 Senator and that was such a hoot!

MX5s Vs 106s. You can put the roof down AND it's RWD. Oh, for '80s appeal, the Mk1s have those pop-up lights too.

Ahhhhhh my 1st love!

Had a mint 35,000 mile example when I was 18. Was only my 2nd car which taught me a lot about respecting a car!

Caught my a couple of times on the lift off over steer, but being a hormonal 18 year old I couldnt get enough!

Replaced it for an R5 GTT, which was equally as 'fun'!!

In our early 20's, ehem nearly 20 years ago, a friend went through a string of girlfriends who ALL had 106 Rallyes. His 205 1.9 GTI seemed to be a magnet. Lightweight, stripped and great fun they were good times. The 106 Rallye was very similar too.

I used to drive a very base spec 106 Diesel (didn't even have a cig lighter socket) and did numerous 400-500 mile round trips in it over the years. Not as nice as a modern motor but totally do-able.

106s are nice little cars but they are very tinny. Luckily I was never involved in a big accident but if I ever was to be, I'd not want to be in one.

I had one of these, plain black just like the one in the ad'. Got to be quicker than ten point something to 60, certainly felt it. The acceleration once rolling was pretty good too, overtaking was easy. Bought it from a place in Leyland and drove it back to the midlands, great fun.

Only problem I had was the silly window clips breaking all the time. Sold it to a copper from Leamington, never seen it since. One of those cars I've owned that I wish I had a huge storage area to keep them in.
