It's hardly low-powered really though is it?

I don't have an issue with the looks, I expect that the chassis will be excellent, as will the fit-and-finish.

I know that they re very different cars, but I do have some sympathy with the view that a 520/530d Touring would be more than up to the job of carting people and luggage across Europe, as is a Mondeo wink.

its not clear from the original posting: did you or PH actually buy this diesel porsche, or is it a loaner from Porsche UK?
It's a loaner, just like 99.9 percent of all 'long-term' cars. Not enough cash in this industry for mags/websites to buy these things.

Car had done over 10k miles before it came to me.

(the Panan can now have a 100l tank, apparently) and it isn't as stable at very high speed.
That might be quite useful for very long journeys, although passengers would have to be fitted with catheters to make full use of the range, even with a much smaller tank.

Does that big tank sit where 'spare wheel well' would be in other cars?

My Volvo V50 is perfectly capable of carting me and the family across Europe. It's a nice enough place to sit for hours on end but not particularly special. If you are intending to sit in a car for frequent long journeys (and have the cash anyway) then I can see the appeal of the Porsche over the 5-series (bland interior, overly firm ride according to some testers).

Buying a car is not a 100% rational and objective process (thank goodness, how dull would that be?!).

I have owned my Panamera for nearly 6 months and my first Porsche, fantastic car and I have had loads of cars!.
The car does what it's says on the tin and the fuel economy is second to none and is out performing my E350 estate by near 40%, on a 400 mile drive it returned 49mpg in sublime comfort too with 3 passengers as well.

A great engine and powertrain is exactly that. Engines that deliver their performance easily and on demand are a joy to live with day to day. I drive a 5 pot T5 as a daily driver. It is not about absolute speed delivery (0-60 is the other side of 11 secs) but the thrust on boost is brilliant. I drove a Viano with the tiptronic auto and that was even better. The box sorted out the gear selection and it would drive exactly as I wanted it, relaxed or urgent on demand. Diesels can be part of a great drivetrain. Chris has also picked up on the fact that the best of them are starting to sound good too. The Panamera Turbo will be drinking a gallon every 18-20 miles or so. Harry Metcalfe's mate gets 40 from his Panamera Diesel. Nobody needs to point out how impressive that is. Porsche's last proper GT car was the 928. That had a poor range through thirst, great a machine as it was and still is. But the GT market has moved on and it is possible, though not necessary, that a black pump powerplant is part of the occassion.

As has possibly been repeatedly said, a 330d Touring is possibly every car we ever need in one, and certainly would waft throughout Europe in large chunks at a time.

Luckily though, we have choices. smile

Day to day, possibly not. That's not the point imo.

This car was obviously something that Porsche had to put together to fill a gaping hole in their range - no one can get away without having some sort of large diesel-engined option in their offerings these days.

But you have to love it when something that was cobbled together (in the Porsche-engineered sense of 'cobbled together') is so good. It's not the best looking car in the world but I've always liked the way it looks, even if it is very massive smile I've always thought that large capacity diesels suit large, continent-crushing GT and luxury cars because of their relatively effortless performance and range. If I had the money I'd have one........actually, if I had the money for one of these my wife would find out and we'd have a new kitchen but hey-ho wink

You have to love the anti-Porsche bashing though. Porsche make great cars hence the great reviews. Other manufacturers make great cars too. Aren't we lucky.

Plus, not everyone is fortunate enough to be a shiny suited, pan European, bog roll holder salesman.

It's a shame this Porsche doesn't contain the best diesel that VAG have as this seems a little un Porsche.

However, this is more than compensated for by the way it clearly annoys the kind of people who need annoying. wink

It certainly seems a more interesting and realistic proposition than an Aston Martin Rapide.

Very interesting. The Panamera in either Petrol of Diesel engine form is the only Porsche I've ever fancied owning. No tarted up beetles for me....... The Panamera is a 'proper job'.
