Also, I may be wrong but I think I recall that there is no concept of putting a plate on retainer and that it may not be possible to transfer registrations between vehicles.

Quite refreshing to see brilliant photos of amazing cars where the photo hasn't been messed about with smile

Bonkers numbers of Ferraris and Porsches here in Happy Valley - someone must be making a mint out of clutch replacements.

On the way to and back from Stanley today via Repulse Bay, three Phantoms and a Wedge Lagonda.... If I get a chance and it's a tad cooler I'll find a cafe to sit out at and add to the excellent pics already posted here.

These pictures are simply sensational.

Forget Monte Carlo. Forget Monaco. Forget London. Forget Beverly Hills. Hong Kong is the place to spot truly stunning cars of all ages and of all descriptions rather than these Ferraris and Lamborghinis we get for granted.

Keep posting them!

I have a request if I may.

I've always been interested in the very rare MX5 Coupe. Any photos?

How does the reg plate system work over there? Can you basically have what you want?
Essentially, yes.

If memory serves...

There are I think two application windows per year during which you have to fill in a form with the details of the requested mark and file it with the Transport Department (along with an administration fee which may be as much as HKD5000 (£500) (been a while since I looked..), presumably to discourage bogus applications).

At the end of each application window the Transport Department review and vet the registration applications. Anything that is offensive, controversial, breaches a peculiar list of rules around use of numbers, spacing, maximum number of characters, has been registered before etc. etc. does not get taken forward beyond this stage. I think they may only vet a certain number (unknown) on a first come first served basis.

If the number plate passes the vetting process it is then put into a public auction.

If nobody else bids you get the plate you applied for for a de minimis amount (HKD10 (£1) or so). If others bid it goes to the highest bidder.

There are some cracking numberplates out there. I was going to get one but the process was slightly tedious and I never got round to it.
Very interesting, thanks for the info smile

Stunning pics. Love the variety. Guy in my firm, in HK, has a matt black <cough cough> 430 if you see it kicking around. Well used I understand... Lovely guy, complete petrol head.

Driving to Stanley via Repulse Bay with traffic jams allows plenty of time to snap a Ferrari pic,

Round the corner in Happy Valley brings a new surprise each day,

The colour of that Aston is wonderful!

Small Car, I have only ever seen one matte 430 here and it was a Novitec Rosso one.

Sorry, I've never seen one here unfortunately.

A couple of rarities from the weekend. Both mid-engined, 80's Italian sports cars but at the opposite ends of the power spectrum...

Can't be many X1/9s left in this condition!

Snapped from my office window...

A few shots from the last couple of weeks. Not much diversity in my locations recently. Hopefully that will change when the weather cools down...

Very nice looking Exige-S. Seems to be a very different car to the S1/S2, but still looks the business.

I love the 'bug-eye' Scoobies

Can't beat a simple recipe of an Elise and a winding road

This looks the busines (minus the temporary trade plate)

Sublime

You can keep your modern Ferraris, Lambos and Porsches. For photography I'm all about seeing the classics.

Love these so much! The HK car fraternity are a friendly bunch too.

Sexy Clubsport

Different... opinion dividing for sure

Day-glo trim looks boss on this

Elise S1 Exige conversion. Apparently the original cannot pass HK emissions.

It was the Distinguished Gentlemen's Ride charity run for research into prostate cancer this Sunday AM. I thought it was a worthy cause and I know many of you guys like bikes too. More pics here... http://www.flickr.com/photos/48817379@N03/sets/721...

Some great pics there!

I especially like the old due with the Capri. And that weird Lotus thing with the snout?
