It's a Golf, you don't need to own it or even sit inside that it is going to be a generic Golf....they're all bland and the same. Yes this is horrifically fast but that doesn't make a car not dull...

VW just don;t get it do they, The Golf needs no more power, it needs some feel. The M135i has proved to the others that driver feel is more important than outright power. Honestly how much more power than 300bhp do you really need,

All starting to get pub bullste figures now, Thats why i'm happy to stick with my 130i as i know maybe a second quicker to 60 is not worth the loss in driver feel.

another 200bhp at least, just to ensure M135is are very quickly a small dot in your mirrors when you over take them smile

I specced up a Golf R the other day and it came out about £33k (before discount, if any).
At least 8% is achievable on a 7R.
at least VW have learnt from the MKVI R, to my spec that was 42K and the only way to get them at a sensible price was to buy a dealer demo (typically 10k off list)
Yeah, the MKVI R was ridiculous, and I think you're right, they have learnt from the mistakes they made with it. I think that's part of the reason the lease deals seem so good on them too.
Think you're all forgetting that the Bank of England devalued GBP. Everything we import is cira 33% more expensive. Hence why we now have £40,000 hatchbacks.
which makes the current R even better value as its substantially cheaper than the last one

How GTi's have changed, MK1 Golf GTI 970kg, Pug 205 GTi 900kg, this Golf 'could be under 1400kg'
Sure lots more toys and safety devices, but over 400kgs heavier??
That's like having four 16 stone men in the latest GTi!
Colin Chapman said 'simplify and add lightness'; surely a great mantra in todays world of getting more out of less?

Imagine a 1000kg Golf GTi with a 300hp engine, same or better performance, less stressed engine, lower emissions so more company car buyers would go for one, lower purchase price (ditto), better brakes due to lower weight, nicer handling; what's not to like?

400kgs is pretty decent if you take into account how massive the MKVII is compared to the MK1 and that it has 4WD, my moneys on 1600KGs wet

Yes agree its a lot bigger car, and I guess you're probably closer at 1600kgs wet too; yikes that's like having five 19 stone men in an original Golf GTi MK1, just seems madness to me!!

I think the best news from a 370bhp Golf R Evo is that it leaves the door open for a Seat Leon Cupra R with all-wheel drive and +300bhp. That could be a real performance bargain.

There is a very strict pecking order in VAG which goes Audi A3, VW Golf, Seat Leon. So the idea of getting a +300hp 4WD Leon when the best Golf is also 300hp 4WD was out of the question. Now that we have a 370bhp Golf, a 310-320bhp Leon could be a possibility.

I really find comments like this particularly annoying as it just highlights the level of stupidity around here.

Would you enter a topic on the new Focus RS and proclaim that you looked at a 1.6TDCI in a showroom 6 months ago and the new RS will be exactly the same ?
I doubt it.

Would someone go into a Renault dealer and argue that a Renault RS is largely the same as the 1.6 diesel

It must only be the VW Audi group topics that attract these sort of people.

i dont think that will happen, golfs and audis have had 4wd for a long a time and it has never trickled down to the lower marks

also from the sounds of it, if this EVO happens its going to be in very low numbers like the A1 quattro

What are you on about? There are Skodo Octavias, Seat Leons & Toledos available with haldex - just not in the UK.

Then haven't you answered your own question? Its doubtful we will get a plethora of 4WD hatches all of a sudden. Personally (and I'd like to be wrong) I doubt we see a 4WD Leon Cupra variant redface(

I believe the previous poster said NO Seats/Skodas have ever had 4x4 which is false as there are examples of these cars with 4x4 for sale throughout Europe and other markets just not the UK.

OH and to pick up on this point made earlier

FYI A new Peugeot 308 1.6 diesel hatchback weights 1400kg with just FWD.

No but I would go to an Audi dealer, then the Skoda dealer and then finish my day off with VW. The next day I would be confused which car was which because they all looked the same inside rofl

What a odd sense of humour you have, so to answer my question then you wouldn't go onto a Ford Focus RS topic and spew out random comments?

I can't say I have any difficulty identifying an Audi from a Skoda but then I'm a car enthusiast and I look at the details. Would you have the same difficulty identifying a Dacia from a Renault from a Nissan?

I think the point you may have missed is you couldn't mistake a 1.6TDCI for an RS unless you had some sort of eyesight impediment. The same can't be said of the Golf.
