That's a Santana - it was rare in the 1980's and there's only 10 left now. Nice spot!
Not wanting to derail the thread but when I was in Germany in 1986 there were lot of 'sporty' Passat estates around. MK2 GTI steel wheels and black trim I seem to recall.

I guess they are very rare now.

Was the Neon everywhere, though? I've only seen one second-generation model and been in a first-generation model. I have a strange soft spot for the early Neon thanks to Need for Speed Underground.
Well, they weren't everywhere like an Escort or Astra, but they were fairly common (might be skewed around here - I live not for from a successful former Chrysler dealership)

Weird, having a two litre, thirsty engine in a car like that. High tax and a lot of petrol for the performance. You could tell that making them in right hand drive was an afterthought.

Still, when I was 17 I thought a black Neon R/T would be pretty cool (I'm over it now)

Not seen one of these for ages.

Does anyone else think this looks like ( ok apart from the grille)
a Mk1 Scenic landed on an MX5

Common or not, I have to agree that a black R/T would be cool (first-generation especially for the aforementioned NFS connection). Especially a three-door but I don't think they were available in the UK. The limited engine range made very little sense to me either, and probably did contribute to the model's limited sales success.

When they were current I don't think that the differential tax was as much of a decider as it now is. ISTR that once over 1500 (?) 1600? you were into hiogher rate and that was that.

At the unlikely risk of offending a PHer who owned one of those things, if ever there was a car targeted with laser accuracy at the Elvis Impersonator / Paedophile car buyer in the UK that was it. I haven't seen one for a long, long time that isn't covered with aftermarket magpie tat and cheesy stickers, and driven by the sort of person nobody is even slightly surprised to find out has been arrested for being a nonce.

The point is that I won't be mourning the day there are no more Mazda 6s on the road or is that just a little too hard for you to understand? Probably I guess!

This is worse that when someone said the i8 was pooping out a 911. Cannot be unseen.

Totally agree with your comment

I thought my Chrysler Neon suggestion fitted that description pretty well!
Except there were never many of them on the roads.

It wasn't an uncommon car when it was new.

laugh why would you put "2.2 CRD" down the side... like advertising you've got warts! My mum had one when I was younger, it was comfortable but that was the end of the "good things" list.

These were everywhere, once upon a time. Indeed, at one point they were like the default choice for a young lad who wanted a car that was cheap to insure because it looked sporty, but wasn't very fast at all. I can't remember when they suddenly faded from view, but they aren't seen in anything like the numbers that they used to exist in. At one point, every used car dealer in the North had one for sale.

Slightly on topic - I saw a Cavalier GSi this morning, looked ropey as hell but I still found myself wanting it for some reason...

I wouldn't say they are "starting to disappear", there are still thousands of them kicking about.

You won't struggle to find one for sale on eBay.

Jeeps of any type. A few of the new model about with the horrid 'X' rear lights but can't remember the last time I saw an earlier model or the Wrangler.

It wasn't rare but compared to the equivalent Fords, Vauxhalls etc it sold in relatively small numbers.
