It is to us, but when no one in the world (outside a few at British Leyland) had heard of a Range Rover or seen one, that was a Velar to anyone who saw it.As well... as useless as a sports car in a traffic jam... a big SUV lugging all that weight about is no different. But people are allowed to get excited about the latest BMW M car - despite it being used to get from 'the apartment to the office'.

In my case; I want a car that is capable off-road - but will be luxorious day to day. There's not much that beats LR / RR on both fronts.
Having said all of that... seeing WAG types lugging about all that extra heft, is indeed a tad perplexing - and one can feel inspired to go explain to them - that they have a car that is unbelievably capable off road; with lots of trickery and extra heft to make it so; why do they need it all to go down to Tesco. Again, the same could be said of many a sport car... crappy crashy ride on low profiles; enduring horrid British roads... why? Because some people want them; it's that simple.

Surely the actual definition of a petrolhead is someone who can appreciate any car for its ability? That surely includes everything from the joy of ragging a 1.0l Supermini around a B road, driving flat out in a sports car up an alpine road, loping along from London to Edinburgh in a Range Rover and spanking a Defender across a muddy field?
Ultimately, something like the Velar is going to be a fantastic car. Anyone who's driven any Range Rover can attest to be fantastic go anywhere feeling you get driving one. There's something absolutely incredible about driving along a road in a car that's capable of driving through a forest or across a dresset, listen to Land of Hope and Glory at full volume on a stereo that sounds better than anything I've got at home. Just because the car isn't a fibreglass bodied sports car does not make it any less of a valid automotive experience. Plenty of tits drive sports cars (I'd argue easily as many as those who drive SUVs).
And as a final note, I've driven a few electric cars recently, and found them to be genuinely astounding, fun to drive and deeply impressive.....

It's as written on the earlier thread, happy that JLR are successful, but this copy and paste after stretching it a bit styling is getting ridiculous.
As others have said where is the Defender.

Bingo. And to add; the best automotive experiences can be had in the most unusual of vehicles. Once; in the French Alps; I had to hire a Transit van to move a load of furniture. It was a horrid rough ride and the gear change was the rocky side of 'notchy'. However; I took a wrong turn - and the rusty old Transit, and I, ventured along some of the most stunning roads; the high driving position let me get a real eye-full of what was lurking behind the barriers and the smokey diesel lump presented me with all the torque I needed, when I needed it. What had been a horrid day, in the space of just an hour had become one of my most memorable. The fact I didn't even have the option to go fast meant that I took in the views - and truly absorbed where I was. I developed a man crush on that silly thing.
So many on PH are what I call 'faux petrol heads' - they stick to the age old lines of what is deemed petrol head'esque and never deviate. You can spot them a mile off.
On topic; again... in the Alps; we put on our winter set of wheels, sporting Nokian rubber, and feel simply invincible. They are genuinely clever machines and I cannot see how some people don't appreciate what all around vehicle they are. The outgoing Disco' is a bus; a van; a luxury wafter; and a ridiculously talented off-roader... how many cars do so many things so well?
Again, related to what I said before; coincidentally... I've just been sat behind a McLaren... in a traffic jam... going nowhere. Surely that's a more stupid vehicle; for every-day use. Especially on the rainy outskirts of Manchester... but because it'll eat track limits at the Nurburgring; we all love them you get my point. There's a lot of impractical cars on the road. SUV's (for many) are one segment of that.

Very true, just last week I jumped into a Yodel van as I was exiting a Ritz Carlton.S class (and a8 and 7 series) hemorrhage value now in part because the brand is too common to retain it.
My Lambo lost 10% during my ownership period, if that. Ferrari lost nothing. My Merc ended up costing my more than both combined in depreciation and it's partly due to the lease deals the brand runs, and partly because most people just see a Mercedes whether it's a c class or an s class.
The exception is the G wagon which does hold its value. Kind of like the defender, which also holds its value, massively more than the rest of the range rover / land rover line up (possibly because they're both so iconic).
