Have you removed the fuse for the ODB socket, simple and cheap change that will thwart the standard attack.

And just hope you don't need to get out quick in the event of a fire.

If I had to do all that I would move away to somewhere less crime ridden.
In case of fire my kids bedroom windows open onto a lower roof then down onto the garden or straight out the front door as that's at the bottom of the stairs!

Also op my front door has no letterbox and I have mortise locks instead of the flat key locks that can be snapped same on my patio and back doors!

Name of the game is that it's too much hard work cctv and alarms just simply don't deter them

And at the end of the month I have a builder coming to put up 2 brick pillars at the end of my drive so I can have a gate and a nice fence down the side so you can't see the car from the road,

I've never been more scared about owning a golf gti in my life tbh especially when I'm out and the missus is in as she doesn't have access to my keys anyway as they're usually in my pocket

Funny this 1 in 100 gets stolen statistic because two of my friends who both have S3s have had an attempt (one chased the burgler down the street and was threatened)

We live near 3rd world Bradford. (In a nicer area on the opposite side of Leeds)

It's not just the S3, even boggo A3s attract this. My wife's cousin had their front door kicked in, in the night (family inc. 2 young children asleep upstairs) and they took their new A3 1.6tdi and a 6ish year old Golf GTI. Turned out they only took the Golf as it was blocking the A3 in, and they just parked it up nearby. The Audi was never seen again. This was in the North West.

I don't get it.

Oh, there's a gun called a Colt 1911. Right. In common with, oooh, most people - I didn't know that.
It has nothing to do with the Colt. It just means, "come in and we will shoot you", as in we police ourselves.
He was responding to defblade's joke that it should be "we don't call 911, we call 1911".
Yeah, I'm home from a long day at work now and starting to wish I hadn't bothered posting that just before leaving... rolleyes

On my house it's alarmed I have paid extra for doors with additional strengthening and I have windows with that film on the inside that isn't easy to get through

Also if they do come in it would be extremely slow going as every interior door has a Chubb lock that's only accessible from one way so if someone come through the patio they wouldn't get through the dining room door same from the kitchen if they got through into the lounge again the door to my stairs is done the same so it would be a lot of hassle! In my bedroom I keep 2 knives and a lump hammer

I will be honest we have had 3 false alarms within 4yrs and I've been terrified every time but I always make sure I'm prepared Christ knows what would happen if I actually unlocked the lounge door and someone was on the other side, I've considered setting up a paintball gun as a remote sentry but apparently leaving traps is a massive no no according to my mate in the police he says whoever broke in would probably sue me
Holy crap. I sometimes don't even lock our house when I leave to go for a run. Quite happy I don't live in the U.K. In a house reading This thread.
I don't think that's typical.
Yeah I give you that, having said that - it does sound a lot worse than where I live (Austria and Germany). Even my flat in London only has a slightly better lock than the cheapest possible model - not much to steal in there though (and if you want to get in, you can just cut through the plywood door I guess)

Keep keys hidden.
Know what, I'd be doing the exact opposite. Keys in an easy to find place downstairs (but not visible or reachable from the door).

If someone breaks in to take a car I want them to take it and go without coming upstairs where my wife and kids are. I can buy a new box on wheels, I can't buy a new life or family.

There is a very clear and simple theme here, if you live near the innit bruv crowd don't buy anything like an Audi RS or S, or Golf R or GTi, sadly no one is prepared to point out the obvious here.

The knives and hammer , your not going to do anything with them because i'd bet like 99% of us on here your a ordinary law abiding bloke.

The people who have battered there way into your house are not , nicking cars , roughing up heroes so they get the keys quickly is what they do , it's there job.

I have 2 very young children if someone comes in my house I would use the weapons if I could! If I woke up to someone stood at the bottom of my bed damn right I'd st myself but if I've got 2 mins I always go armed, when the alarms gone off before I've happily left it going I've got a knife n so has the wife gone downstairs one on each side of the door unlock the door and turn the light on then do the same at the other doors till the house has been checked I also just leave the alarm ringing till I've checked everything!

Egor110 is correct

If you go at one of these people with a knife you'll get one chance , any hesitation and they'll take it and kill you with it , they're not after your kids they're after your car, you don't want these people coming upstairs and threatening you, it's a car, leave the keys where they can find them, if they're in the house that's as far as you want them coming.

You can replace a car, your kids will never have another dad

Some years ago a friend of my wife was woken by the sound of somebody downstairs so she called the police, when she came downstairs after they'd gone she found the kitchen knives laying on the bottom step , she said to the copper they must've been intending to make a drink because they've boiled the kettle

No love, that was for you if you'd come downstairs

Heard an almighty, unmistakeable clatter of smashing glass a few weeks ago. Made my blood run cold waking bolt upright knowing full well I had someone entering the house. Always wondered how I'd react.

Operating solely off what I can assume was adrenaline, up in seconds making my presence known flicking on all the lights. Instinctively grabbed the 2.5 lb floor lifter that lies conveniently under my bed.

Surged down the stairs riding a wave of fight or flight, braced myself to unlock the internally locked dining room door (leads on to our patio doors) and confront whatever, or whoever was standing there. Still relatively uncertain as to what I'd actually do.

Managed to hurl the door open and flick the light on almost simultaneously.

Knew I should have used heavy duty rawlplugs for that bd shelf that houses my single malt collection. fking thing had worked loose overtime and come crashing down spectacularly, taking several hundred quids worth of sweet nectar with it in the process.

Fuming wasn't the word, think I would've preferred a scrote..

Yep, also heard of someone finding pan of water boiling on the cooker. Whilst I think I'd have a go, how do you defend against that!

90+% of houses can be easily broken into in minutes. If you haven't done something about it, don't complain if/when it happens.

As I said, ghost immobilisor is a much better option.
I would prefer his option to a ghost immobilisor.

Imagine they break into your house and confront you, you give them the keys and they proceed to try to start the vehicle. If it wont start the chances are they will just re enter the house and then demand you tell them how to start the car with possible physical implications.

If they are able to drive off slightly that means at least there is some distance between you and said criminals meaning there is more time for police etc to arive. They are more likely to run, they cant exactly drive back to you to get you to tell them.
If the car won't start it might just be broken. How would anyone know any different.

I'd like to reiterate some of the replies on this thread about making your home or wherever you keep the keys (including the spare) as difficult as possible to get into. Making your home look less appealing only works if your neighbour also has a car they want to steal, or if they're house burglars for example. PIR lights are a deterrent, as is simple stuff like spiky plants, trellis on top of fences etc.
If they get past the external security, then an alarm system which has an internal siren that they can hear and will wake you up at night as well as notifying is essential.
Internal doors locked from one side between the point of entry and the keys will also help stop them as the vast majority of overnight burglaries are for car keys and they don't want to make noise. If the attack is taking place while you're out then they will likely carry on (I've seen internal doors and frames get butchered from the side without the keyhole to get access to the rest of the house) as the chances of being disturbed are minimal, but if they've heard the alarm they won't hang around for long.
Driveway gates that are lockable are also good.

We got targeted a month or so ago, they turned the external PIR sensor upwards, climbed over a 2m fence (there was two of them) and had a go at the patio door handles at 1.30am lasting for 20 minutes. I have it on CCTV which was recording internally. Almost certainly they were after the keys for my 3 month old Golf GTI.
They butchered the patio doors but failed to get in due to a cylinder guard around my euro lock, and thanks to insurance I now have uprated patio doors with no external locks (half barrel internally), hinge pins and laminated glass. I've also got a Patlock as well.
I also have trellis on top of the 2m fence, chubb locks on the internal doors and an alarm system with an internal sounder battery backed up and GPRS linked so if they do cut the power or internet then it carries on working. Still got the CCTV as well but that didn't stop them trying last time...

I live in Leeds.

^^ Don't get this, you have patio doors and they were attempting to break the lock rather than smash the glass?
