A good friend of mine paid his deposit to a dealer in Kent over a week before this online launch (of which he wasn't made aware of) order and spec confirmed.

Dealer calls him to say his order is cancelled a week later as the online order day sold out!
Your friend had a confirmed order which was cancelled? Your friend needs to ask his dealer why they are lying, dealers were not able to make an order despite what some claimed. Your friend also needs to ask why the communication from Toyota to dealers re online only was not passed on to him. Was your friend not on the mailing list for GR86 info? I think there were two emails from that, one a few days before and one just as orders opened.

I can understand your friend's disappointment but the 90 minute sell-out shows that many were fully aware of the process so perhaps the ordering system was actually fine?

GT86 depreciation is very modest. My 2014 has been lost very little money in the last four years and whilst there is a Covid effect the previous owner from new only lost £3000 a year/£250 a month on it. For a new car and as a used car that seems modest.

For a GR86 that fixes all the minor problems with the car and with a short production run and everything going electric the GR86 will easily outperform the GT86 depreciation. GT86's that have not been Barry'd through Halfords or to the moon have pretty much stopped depreciating because what else is there?

GR86 will be cheap, reliable and a lot of fun. Some people will hate that...

No the dealer is a joke. He shouldn’t have taken a deposit on a car that he wasn’t selling and a week after it was known it was online only
I'm still waiting for my initial deposit (£200) back from a dealer who did the same with me. Luckily, they told me about the on-line order process and I have a confirmation from that.

Even though I managed to get a confirmed order, it only happened because of what I learned from PH threads.

Toyota never sent me one email even though I registered for info about the GR86 last year.

Toyota never told me how and when the car was going on sale and neither did my local dealer. In fact, I told my local dealer.

They asked me to come into the dealership to place the order online which I couldn't do. I assume this was to make sure I selected them in the order. They have since told me that only 4 out of the 6 people who wanted one managed to secure one (including me).

On the day i couldn't see how to navigate the Toyota website to ordering the car - it was a link supplied from a PH post that helped me out.

I still haven't received my original £500 deposit back.

I'm sure this will all be forgotten when the car turns up but I do have a feeling that the saga isn't over yet.

Same here, went to the dealership to order and ended up doing it on my phone. Order confirmed for a leccy blue manual at nine past ten. Still no refund of the grand I gave the dealership.

I have to say my dealer was pretty good & let me know it was online order only & were happy to return my deposit, they did want me to go in & order it with them online and offered me an appointment at 12.30 on the 20th but I did decline as I thought that was too late & thought there wouldn't be much left! Fortunately I had registered my interest with Toyota and luckily received the updates and the link to order, so now have a confirmed order just waiting for an idea of a delivery date?

Toyota made it clear 6 days before launch here:

https://mag.toyota.co.uk/all-new-toyota-gr86-makes...

They explain the order process in great detail and why they chose to sell the car this way.

The only thing I would say is the link on the article takes you to Toyota's website the GR86 wasn't & still isn't on the site, you needed to be emailed the link for ordering from Toyota which I think only those who had previously registered interest received, that detail seemed to be missing?

I registered my interest in August last year and the only email I received from Toyota was the 'Thanks for registering' response.

I was emailed a link. As they sold out in 90 minutes, I don’t think they made it difficult. Clearly, there appears to have been some miscommunication between dealers and customers. Who is responsible for that only the dealers and Toyota knows. But I’d be shocked, given that they announced the ordering process at least 6 days before, if it turns out dealers didn’t get fair warning of what the ordering process would be.

My email with the direct link arrived *after* I managed to guess the URL (/new-cars/gr86) - I was expecting it to show itself in the main list when it refreshed the site at 10am. Got my confirmation at 10:21 and deposit has been taken thankfully.

ETA: I signed up for the notification only a few days before.

Very similar for me. I got the mail from Toyota with the buy link at 10:09 on the 20th, but I'd already found the link and was half way done. Got my confirmation at 10:23 and the deposit has been taken. Just waiting now.

I’ve been told that in America, Toyota are taking deposits for next year’s allocation.

Is that likely to happen here?
Nobody knows. However, I believe the US market will continue after 2024 so they could still be buying new ones in 5 or 6 years time but that won't be the case here.

Toyota has definitely been on a roll recently

GR86 - sold out already and extremely hyped by public and media

GR Yaris - guaranteed future classic, hot hatch hero and the best car of 2021.

GR Corolla - America’s future classic.

Supra - now available with a manual gearbox to please the enthusiasts.

Normal Corolla - good sales in Europe unlike the last 20 years (under different nameplates), actually a decent white goods car.

Normal Yaris - has killed the sales of the Honda Jazz in Europe and has closed the sales gap on its European competition.

New bZ EV range - first model released has a very competitive 317 mile range and 150Kw fast charging to tempt sales away from the Koreans and Tesla.

Lexus - new models again closing the gap against the European competition

Makes sense.

Imagine pretending to supply two years worth of cars between now and august.

Last time I checked 3 months doesn’t equal 24.

Marketing hype.

I wouldn’t rely on their social media team, they’ve been consistently wrong in the run up to the launch so what’s to say they’re right now.

Funny because these “Barry’d through Halfords” ones are usually way better than the factory car…

In almost every way…. laugh
