James was the bloke who produced that notorious Autocar top-100 supplement wasn't he? Where if you took all the initial letters of the article it spelled something vaguely naughty.

To the previous posters, I take you haven't seen Clarkson on QI before then. He was witty, erudite and entertaining. Shame I had heard the shotgun story before though.
So what makes you think QI isn't more-or-less scripted also ? Just like "Have I got News For You?". It's TV; they don't take many chances. Anyone ever been to a Top Gear filming ? (I haven't). Is it done in just one take or are there multiple retakes ? Would be interested to know, but my money's on the re-takes route.

As far as I recall there were multiple takes when they were talking about the cars in the studio. But for the 'news' section, and certainly the interview with the 'reasonably priced star', there was one take but they broadcast much less than they filmed.

They were certainly making decisions about how to squeeze the material into the alloted time as they went along. Although it's scripted in the sense of the presenters preparing what they want to say, I got the impression they were being reasonably genuine. Caricaturing themselves to some extent but not playing parts. I got the chance to talk briefly with James May about the Caterham the team had built, and his remarks were exactly in character with what he had said on the film.

Let me put it this way, if they stopped scripting it and just said what they thought, the production would no doubt be chaos but the content wouldn't be that much different.

That was my impression anyway, there must be others out their who've seen it filmed. What do you guys think?

(Somewhere no doubt, members of the Top Gear production team are clustered round a PC, laughing themselves silly at this thread.)
