Surely it only has value as long as there are people called Craig.

I haven’t come across a Craig since leaving school 35 years ago. It’s like Graham and Gordon you don’t see many of them anymore either.
You might be right. I know a lot of Craigs - all about 35 - 45.... but prime earning age for the next 30 years. After that, you could well be correct although names often seem to be cyclical.

Your plate no doubt will have been one of the best investments there, but do you think any of those plates will have surpassed yours in terms of appreciation?
Generally speaking there's been a steady appreciation of all those plates, three spring to mind HC 9 £14900-TH 2 £20000-LSA 1 £15990 Also bearing in mind all will have been upto negotiation,as i said i purchased mine directly and not through an agent. Craig is a very popular Scottish name and a common surname,I've had some serious interest over the years, one been a substantial offer in writing bearing in mind it's not advertised and not for sale. I've certainly enjoyed owning it the fact it's been a good investment is a bonus to for my family not me..!

To say that's 30 years ago there's some expensive plates..

ANN 1 £100,000

KAT 1E £75,000

CRA 1G £45,000

F1 RST £45,000

Wonder what there worth today.? rolleyes
ANN 1.. 1933. It was reversed in 1958. I remember a story that 1 ANN was on a milk float of all things, and was bought by one of the Regiments Princess Anne was associated with and presented to her. She had it on her Scimitar for some time, but had to dispose of it as it was a security risk. Now showing on a Fezza.

I bought SCS 1 from one of the first number plate dealers way back in 1969 for £125.
He also had 4K for the same price and SCS 7 for £40.
If only ...
That was way before retention certificates.
I had to "sell "my mini to the owner of the Austin Princess in Ayrshire ,which had been assigned the plate as original issue in 1963.
He then transferred the plate and I bought the Mini back.
A very long winded process, I think it took about six months in total if I recall correctly.

To be fair I think Afzal Khan inflates his reg prices quite a bit, however the sentiment stands, still worth a whole lot more than £2,000 odd in todays money (calculated for inflation)

My dream plate in there, OLD 1, my initials. £12,500 at the time and sold again in 2019 for £30k at Brightwells auction.

the owner of 'OLD 100' lived in Scotland. He was a Minister and had a favourite Hymn.
I'll leave you to guess the number of the Hymn.

I also have a large number of cuttings somewhere. I must dig them out. I remember Timian registrations advertising. When I was a kid I used to spend hours reading the adverts at the back of the Sunday Times.
Any 1x1 ads would be great. Even better if it contains a price and date

Exchange and Mart 31/3/1988
8 K £18,000
D 6 £14,200
F 9 £15,000
O 6 £11,000

These are from Motormarks dated September 1988. They faxed their stock list to me.

This was at the end of an economic euphoria type period, and the prices were sky high, there was an economic turndown after 89 I think and the registration prices were a lot lower for quite a few years.

Now this is the kind of number plate history that I thrive on. From the horses mouth, too.

Thanks for sharing. From a 1x1 pov I only see O 7 and K 5. Do you happen to have dates for the ads?

Plenty of other nice plates, inclusing a very very nice plate for me, but alas those ads are from a while back.

As so it happens I do have a date
