Worth a haggle to bring into thread budget? I wrongly assumed the 6 pots were all 5 speeds.

That is lovely. I'm surprised by the 4 speed box on a fuel injected car too.https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C979028

It's certainly in budget, and great colour. Does it have a slight look of Hillman Avenger about it?
For some reason I was thinking of 5k as the top of the price range (another thread?).I must say I can't see much Avenger in there. Maybe a bit of Hunter if you squint with one eye and poke the other one out?

Very '70s.https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C979028
My grandfather had a Maxi in a very similar colour.
We had an Allegro in baby st beige.
That car looks less like a Hunter or even Granada from pretty much any other angle
Not sure whether it's lovely, but it certainly fits the interesting and retro criteria;
The Mitsubishi Pajero Junior Flying Pug. One of only 139 made (out of a planned 1000), produced during Japan's retro design craze. I can't possibly think why more weren't made

Tasty XJ40
Negatives: Leaper.
Positives: Everything else, including the 6.0 litre V12 with a supposed 450 bhp.

That car looks pretty decent to me. It's the 'wrong' engine for those that care about that sort of stuff, but looks reasonably well-cared-for. Probably falls into the faintly desirable box, without being cheap enough to be appealing 'because cheap'.
Yes, it will keep up with the traffic and no-one will expect a Merc of this age to be fast these days so the fact that a Golf GTI disappears into the distance is not really a problem. If the repaint was well done it might be a good buy for someone who values low blood pressure and calm stately progress to the minimisation of journey times.
Can't help thinking I'd prefer velour, though. It's soooo comfortable on a 126, and wears so well.

I always wonder about the people who buy cars like that new - who decided to spend more than the price of an average house on a Mercedes SEC, but then decided to go for the basic engine?
Seems like one of those "in for a penny, in for a pound" things. I doubt a 500 or 560 would've had a much worse range or worse maintenance requirements.

The 560 is slightly more complicated in the suspension but that apart the maintenance is exactly the same on all of them. Really it's just that many people simply aren't interested in have more performance available than they want to use, and other aspects of a car are more important to them. Bear in mind that in 1989 even the 4.2 was a fast car in any case. The fact that 30 years later it has the same go as a mid-range car like a BMW 320D means it's still fast enough for any actual transport purpose today. Adn maybe the person who specified it was just using it for a 30 mile commute on a busy road every day.
Loads of E38 728i got sold, loads of 300SE four door S classes, same thing.
