So what interesting new species will fall to the realms of £5k during this thread's time?

Just when I convince myself that I'd be happy sending a few more years messing around with old Toyotas you show me a one owner x350 XJR that would be within thread budget with a tiny haggle...I am so, so tempted by one. Seems like a car that I could buy and keep quite literally forever as long as I kept on top of maintenance which I'm confident I could do myself. I'm never going to be able to sell one on, but why would I? I'm not going to grow out of a supercharged v8 jaguar...
Someone talk me out of (or into) it.

Imagine we fell through a time portal into 2002 and were bizarrely still posting in Best Smokre Barges 1-5 Large.
It's amazing how comparatively crap, relatively speaking the cars in this thread would be.
Hmm, Senator 3.0 24v, Carlton GSi 3000, Cavalier V6 CDX, Mondeo V6 Ghia X. Plus lots of W124s, W140s, E34s and E32s. It's amazing how comparatively crap, relatively speaking the cars in this thread would be.

I dont think you need convincing, buy it, polish it, love it, use it at weekends or every day, its gotta be all the car you could ever need, rem it epticius (latinish for get it bought)

Alas, I'm not quite in the position to buy this particular example but it has got me thinking about them in a lot more detail. The supply of cars available for between £5-6k had dried up or where looking incredibly ropey, and to be honest an initial outlay of £6k is hefty enough for me as it is - The most I've ever spent on a car is a grand!Apologies, having recently bought something myself I now need to buy things vicariously through other people!
I have been considering X308s for a while too, but I don't think I could quite love a X308 as much as I should do knowing that a X350 is attainable (barely). Then there is the S Type R, but again I think the XJR is far prettier, its bigger, better speced and it is lighter . The only reason I'd go for one is because I could afford a half decent, low miler whilst XJRs are well in the six figures on the odometer for the money.
I suppose that is my main hesitation, going in at the bottom end of the market on a car that commanded £60k less than 10 years ago. I know financially its going to be far from cheap to run, but I don't want a continuous money pit.
